UAE Family Residence Sponsorship
At a glance
You may be able to live in the UAE by joining a close family member who is a UAE citizen or legal resident. The family member acts as your sponsor. The requirements depend on their status and your relationship.
- Sponsor
- A UAE citizen or foreign resident with a valid residence permit
- Family and work rules
- Official records must prove an eligible family relationship; family residence does not itself authorize work
- Resident sponsor’s income
- At least AED 3,000 monthly with employer-provided housing, or AED 4,000 without it; suitable family housing is required
Summary
This is the usual residence route for close family members of UAE citizens and UAE residents. Spouses are the most common case, but children and some parents can also qualify. The exact rules depend on who the sponsor is and which family relationship applies.

Eligibility
The requirements depend on your sponsor and your relationship to them.
Relationship
- You are the spouse, child, or another eligible close family member of the sponsor.
- You can prove the relationship with the required records.
If the sponsor is a UAE resident
- The sponsor has a valid UAE residence permit.
- The sponsor has suitable housing for the family.
- The sponsor has family income of at least AED 3,000 a month with housing provided by the employer, or AED 4,000 a month without housing provided.
If the sponsor is a UAE citizen
- The sponsor is a male or female UAE citizen.
- The relationship is proven.
- A foreign spouse, parent, or child can usually get a 5-year residence permit under this route.
Family members a foreign resident can sponsor
- Spouse.
- Sons under 25; older sons may remain on a parent's sponsorship with proof of higher education.
- Unmarried daughters.
- Children with special needs regardless of age.
- Green Visa holders may be able to sponsor more close relatives. Confirm which relationships are covered by the rules for first-degree relatives.
Medical and document steps
- Family members aged 18 or older must complete the medical fitness process.
- Foreign marriage and birth records usually need official authentication before you apply. Check the insurance and document requirements for your family category.
What This Route Allows
Qualifying family members can live in the UAE. For families of foreign residents, the permit normally expires no later than the sponsor's residence permit. A sponsored family member who wants to work needs the appropriate work permit.
What This Route Is Not
This is not based only on wanting to live near family. The family relationship must fit the legal category and usually must be supported by records and sponsor documents.
Next Steps
- Work out which route applies: UAE-citizen sponsor or UAE-resident sponsor.
- Collect the marriage or birth certificates and arrange any required official authentication of foreign documents.
- Check the sponsor's residence, salary, and housing documents if the sponsor is a foreign resident.
- Apply through ICP, the federal residence authority, or GDRFA, Dubai's residence authority, depending on the emirate.
- If a sponsored spouse wants to work, the employer can apply for a separate work permit without changing the family residence route.
