UAE Self-Sponsored Residence Visa

Pathway overview

At a glance

The UAE Green Visa lets qualifying employees, freelancers, self-employed professionals, investors, and business partners live in the UAE for five years without an employer sponsor. Each category has its own work, qualification, income, or investment requirements.

Job offer required?
For skilled employees: a UAE contract, an approved skill-level 1–3 role, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and at least AED 15,000 monthly pay
Freelancers
Labor-ministry freelance permit and degree or specialized diploma; AED 360,000 annual income in the previous two years, or accepted proof of self-support
Investors or partners
An existing UAE business or investment, with the required approvals, license, and ownership or partnership records

Summary

The UAE’s Green Residence program covers skilled employees, freelancers and self-employed people, and qualifying investors or business partners. Each has its own evidence and financial tests, so the employee salary threshold does not apply to every applicant.

The five-year permit can be renewed if you continue to qualify. Holding residence without an employer sponsor does not remove the separate work-permit or business-license requirements.

Choose the Green Visa category that fits you
  1. Check your category Options cover skilled employees, freelancers and self-employed professionals, and investors or business partners.
  2. Gather the required documents Prepare the work, qualification, income, or business records for your category.
  3. Apply and prepare for renewal Use the relevant residence authority and keep proof that you continue to qualify.

You only need to qualify through one category. Living without an employer sponsor does not remove work-permit or business-license requirements.

What This Route Allows

Green Residence lets you live in the UAE for five years without an employer sponsor and sponsor eligible family members. Renewal depends on continuing to meet your skilled-employee, freelance, self-employment, or investment category. Work and business activity must also meet the relevant permit and licensing rules.

What This Route Is Not

This is not permanent residence or citizenship. It does not remove the work-permit, business-license, or category requirements.

Next Steps

  1. Choose the category that matches your work or investment.
  2. Gather the documents required for that category.
  3. Arrange official authentication of your degree if your category requires it.
  4. Apply through ICP, the federal residence authority, or GDRFA, Dubai's residence authority, once your documents are ready.
  5. Before expiry, check that you still meet your category and prepare the renewal evidence.
