Argentine Citizenship After Residence
At a glance
Argentina’s standard citizenship route requires applicants aged 18 or older to complete two years of lawful residence without leaving the country. You then apply personally through DNM’s RaDEX system.

Summary
Adults seeking Argentine citizenship after qualifying residence begin new applications through the migration authority’s online RaDEX system. You must apply personally while in Argentina and supply your resident identity card, current Argentine criminal-record certificate, proof of work or support, and CUIT or CUIL identification number.
The authority may request further evidence of the qualifying residence period, including compliance with the rule against trips abroad. An advisor can help explain the requirements, but the authority says a filing agent is not required.
Eligibility
For the standard route, you must:
- Be a foreign citizen aged 18 or older who is not already Argentine through birth or option.
- Hold qualifying lawful residence for the two years immediately before applying.
- Remain in Argentina throughout those two years, with no departure abroad.
- Apply to DNM and formally express your wish to become Argentine.
Most people born in Argentina are already citizens. If the narrow exception for children of foreign diplomatic officials may apply, confirm your status first.
Which residence counts
DNM’s application guidance covers holders of temporary or permanent residence. Count from the approved residence decision, not simply your arrival date or the date you opened an application. Tourist stays do not count as qualifying residence. A residencia precaria—permission issued while a residence case is pending—does not by itself prove the residence required for naturalization.
The no-travel rule is strict. Under the changes made by Decree 366/2025, even a short departure breaks the two-year period. Do not assume an emergency or work trip is exempt; get guidance on your dates if you have left Argentina.
Documents to start the application
DNM asks for your national identity card (DNI), a current Argentine criminal-record certificate from the Registro Nacional de Reincidencia, proof of your occupation or how you support yourself, and your tax or employment identification record (CUIT or CUIL). It may ask for more documents later.
Marriage to an Argentine, an Argentine child, property ownership, Spanish ability, or a profession does not replace the standard requirements. The current law does not list a Spanish-language exam. Citizenship through a qualifying investment is a separate route.

Residence start Confirm when qualifying residence began Use the approved temporary or permanent residence records, not just a tourist entry or pending application.

Two qualifying years Check that you did not leave Argentina The current ordinary rule requires two years immediately before filing without a departure abroad.

Application and decision Apply through DNM Start through RaDEX and follow the citizenship-letter and updated-DNI process if approved.
The residence period and no-departure test must both be met. This is the current administrative route, not the older federal-court procedure.
Investment citizenship has a separate legal basis and application process
Investment citizenship has a separate legal basis and application process
The investment basis can waive the ordinary residence period, but its intake is not confirmed open. It should not be used to shorten the residence requirement in an ordinary naturalization application.
Timing: The October 2 announcement gives a quarter, not an opening day. Filing instructions and an official confirmation that intake has begun are still needed. The older legal commencement dates are not application-opening dates.
What This Route Allows
If DNM approves the application, it issues a citizenship letter, called a carta de ciudadanía, and coordinates with RENAPER, the identity-document authority, to update your DNI.
As an Argentine citizen, you can live, work, and study in Argentina without a residence permit and apply for citizen travel documents. Political rights follow the Constitution and election laws; Law 346 provides for their exercise from age 16, subject to those rules.
The citizenship letter and proceedings are free under the law. Supporting records, authentication, translations, and identity-document services may have separate charges.
Check the law of any other country whose citizenship you hold. Argentina’s treatment of dual nationality does not determine whether that country lets you keep its citizenship or which passport it requires you to use.
What This Route Is Not
Two years in Argentina alone is not enough. You need the qualifying residence status, no departures during the required period, and an approved personal application. Marriage or having an Argentine child does not automatically grant citizenship.
Since October 6, 2025, ordinary applications start through RaDEX with DNM. Older instructions to begin in federal court do not describe this process.
Approval is not guaranteed by a particular date. DNM can request further evidence, and this residence-based process is separate from citizenship through investment.
Next Steps
- Check whether you already qualify through birth in Argentina or an Argentine parent.
- Gather your residence decisions and DNI records to confirm when qualifying residence began.
- Check every entry and exit during the proposed two-year period. If you left Argentina, confirm when a new uninterrupted period will be complete.
- Prepare your DNI, criminal-record certificate, proof of occupation or support, and CUIT or CUIL record. Keep supporting family, residence, and income records available.
- Apply through the citizenship option in RaDEX while you are in Argentina, following the personal-application instructions.
- Respond to any requests from DNM. If approved, follow the instructions for your citizenship letter and updated DNI.
