Naturalized citizens
At least five years holding citizenship of Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, or Colombia
Personal records
Accepted identity and nationality proof, lawful entry, Argentine address, and required criminal-record certificates

Summary

Argentina’s MERCOSUR residence arrangements cover specified South American nationalities, with different eligibility lists for citizens by birth and people who became citizens later. The birth-based list covers Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela; the naturalized-citizen list is narrower and generally requires five years holding that nationality.

No job offer, investment, or family tie is required for this category. The application still needs identity, nationality, lawful-entry, address, and criminal-record evidence.

Check the rules for your citizenship
  1. Check the country list Use the current official list for native citizens or the narrower list for naturalized citizens.
  2. Prove any required citizenship period For the covered naturalized-citizen branch, document at least five years since acquisition, then prepare entry and background records.
  3. Apply for two-year residence Use the applicable residence process and complete the DNI steps after approval.

Living in a listed country is not the same as holding its nationality. Permanent residence requires a later application with its own conditions.

Eligibility

Check your nationality

Citizens by birth of these countries are listed: Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

If you became a citizen through naturalization, you must have held that citizenship for at least five years, and it must be from Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, or Colombia. The naturalized-citizen rule does not include Venezuela, Guyana, or Suriname. Keep the certificate or other official record showing when you became a citizen; a passport alone may not prove the five years.

If you have more than one citizenship, you can use an eligible one if you can document that it meets these rules.

Prepare your documents

For the in-country RaDEX application, you must be in Argentina and provide:

You must meet Argentina’s entry and residence rules and disclose the relevant criminal and immigration history.

Foreign official records generally need an apostille or consular legalization to authenticate them. Documents in another language usually need a qualified Spanish translation and the required local certification. Some MERCOSUR documents have simplified procedures; follow the rules for the issuing country and document.

What This Route Allows

If approved, you receive temporary residence for two years. While it is valid, you can live, study, and work in Argentina, subject to ordinary employment, tax, professional, and licensing rules. Temporary residence also permits the holder to obtain an Argentine identity card (DNI).

This status can support a later permanent-residence application. Migraciones' current FAQ says a MERCOSUR national can generally request permanent residence after two years of temporary residence. It also says the person must have remained in Argentina for more than half of the authorized residence period. Permanent residence is not issued automatically when the two years end: the holder must file the separate application, prove the required history, and meet the rules in force at that time.

The temporary authorization must remain valid. Migraciones advises beginning a renewal during the 60 days before expiration when renewal is needed. Current law can cancel temporary residence after prolonged absence; the authorization and any permitted exceptions should be checked before a long trip.

What This Route Is Not

This is not available merely because a person resides in, was formerly resident in, or has family in a listed country. The route requires the qualifying nationality itself.

It is not a general Latin American residence permit. Nationals of other countries need a different Argentine category unless they also hold an eligible passport.

It is not immediate permanent residence or Argentine citizenship. Permanent residence requires a later application. Citizenship is governed by the Citizenship Law and, under the standard current rule, requires an adult applicant to complete two years of continuous legal residence in Argentina immediately before applying. The current citizenship text treats any departure during that two-year window as breaking continuity, so the citizenship test is not the same as the rule for time spent in Argentina for permanent residence.

Finally, residence does not by itself recognize a foreign professional qualification. A person may work generally as a temporary resident, but a regulated profession can require separate recognition of your qualifications or professional registration.

Next Steps

  1. Check which citizenship you will use and whether the birth or naturalization rules apply. For naturalization, obtain proof of the date.
  2. Read the current Migraciones checklist before ordering documents with limited validity, such as criminal-record certificates.
  3. Gather your identity, entry, address, and background records, with the required authentication and translations.
  4. Apply through RaDEX while in Argentina and follow the fee, upload, appointment, and identity-check instructions.
  5. Keep the approval, track your time in Argentina, and plan renewal before expiration. Permanent residence needs a separate application.
