Summary

Argentina’s employee residence route lets foreign workers live in the country for a job with an Argentine employer. The employer supplies its tax and foreign-worker registrations and a pre-employment contract covering duties, hours, term, workplace, and pay. Looking for a job is not enough for the residence application.

This process relies on the specific employer and job rather than a general points or shortage-occupation system. If the profession is regulated, recognition of your qualifications or a professional license may also be needed.

Prepare the job documents with your employer
  1. Check the employer’s registrations The Argentine employer must meet the tax and foreign-worker-sponsor requirements.
  2. Prepare the required contract Document duties, hours, term, location, pay, and the employer’s tax identification.
  3. Apply and register the employment Follow the applicable residence procedure and submit the required payroll-registration evidence.

This category requires a real local employee relationship. Job seeking and independent contracting have different requirements.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Your employer must be established in Argentina and hire you as an employee. The pre-employment contract must state:

Follow the current rules for certifying the contract and signatures. The employer must be registered with the tax authority and the official registry for organizations hiring foreign workers. Within 30 calendar days after starting the residence application, submit proof of your employment registration with the tax authority, called alta temprana.

You need an actual employer and contract before applying. Self-employment, freelancing, or work for a foreign business without an Argentine employment relationship does not qualify under this route.

For an in-country application through the RaDEX online system, you generally need a valid passport or accepted identity document, proof of lawful entry and address, and criminal-record certificates. Applicants over 16 ordinarily need an Argentine certificate and certificates from countries where they lived for more than one year during the previous three years.

Foreign official records usually need an apostille or consular legalization to authenticate them, plus an accepted Spanish translation when required. Check the current health declaration and any professional documents in the application instructions.

A small employer can qualify if it can meet the same registration, contract, payroll, and immigration requirements.

What This Route Allows

Approval gives one year of temporary residence for the documented employment and can be renewed under the current route. A temporary resident may live, work, and study in Argentina and can obtain an Argentine identity card (DNI).

The employee receives the labor and social protections that apply under Argentine law. Immigration authorization does not remove the employer's obligations concerning registration, payroll, social security, workplace standards, or the applicable collective agreement.

Time in temporary residence can support a later permanent-residence application. Migraciones' current FAQ says MERCOSUR nationals generally need two years of temporary residence and non-MERCOSUR nationals three years, and the applicant must have remained in Argentina for more than half of the authorized residence period. Permanent residence requires a separate filing and is not guaranteed by completing a particular job contract.

What This Route Is Not

You cannot use this route just to look for a job or to freelance. Remote workers serving employers or clients abroad may want to review the shorter digital-nomad route.

The employer’s registration alone is not enough: it must provide the contract and complete the steps for your employment. Residence approval also does not replace professional recognition or licensing, including for regulated health, legal, engineering, or teaching work.

Relatives need their own qualifying family applications. Permanent residence and citizenship require separate applications too. Standard naturalization currently requires two years of lawful residence without leaving Argentina during that period.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm that the Argentine employer will hire you as an employee and complete the payroll, tax, and immigration registrations.
  2. Prepare the pre-employment contract with the required terms, pay, CUIT, and certified signatures.
  3. Arrange the alta temprana employment registration and proof within the required timetable.
  4. Start any professional recognition or licensing process needed for your job.
  5. Gather your identity, entry, address, health, and criminal-record documents, with authentication and Spanish translations as required.
  6. Apply through RaDEX while in Argentina, unless Migraciones instructs you to use an entry-permit or consular process.
  7. Keep the approval, identity card, contract, and employer records. Check renewal or a change of category before expiration, especially if your job changes.
