Austria Graduate Work Residence

Austria Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

After qualifying higher education or required post-study training in Austria, eligible graduates from outside the EU can extend their student permit once for 12 months to look for work or start a business. A suitable job matching the qualification may then support a Red-White-Red Card without the usual points test.

Education
A qualifying degree from an Austrian university
Job offer required?
Needed for the Red-White-Red Card; a separate graduate job-search period is available
Job and pay
Work must match the degree and pay the local graduate rate; no points test

Summary

Third-country graduates of Austrian universities can stay to look for qualified work and then switch to a Red-White-Red Card if the job matches their education and pays the local graduate rate. There is no points test for this graduate route.

The graduate card starts with a particular approved job. A later Red-White-Red Card plus may be available after 21 qualifying work months in the preceding 24 months, giving broader access to employment. Permanent status involves a separate residence and integration assessment.

From an Austrian qualification to a qualifying job
  1. Confirm successful completion Obtain the Austrian qualification and any required post-study training evidence.
  2. Use the graduate search period if needed Apply for the one-time student-permit extension before the existing permit expires.
  3. Apply for the graduate Red-White-Red Card A suitable job must match the qualification level and pay the required locally customary salary.

The search extension is temporary. Graduation alone does not grant the employment card.

Eligibility

The graduate normally must have successfully completed a diploma program from at least its second stage, a bachelor's program, master's program, or doctoral program at an Austrian university, university of applied sciences, or accredited private university. Official guidance also accounts for compulsory training following studies where applicable.

For the 12-month search extension, the graduate must apply while eligible to renew the student title and continue meeting the general student-residence conditions, including sufficient support and all-risk health insurance. The extension permits job search or business preparation; it is not itself the Red-White-Red Card.

For the work card, the applicant needs:

There is no points test and no labor-market test (a check for suitable workers already available locally) for this graduate conversion. However, a regulated profession can still require recognition or professional authorization before the person may lawfully practice it.

More about this route

The work must match the graduate's level of qualification, and the employer must pay the locally customary gross salary received by comparable Austrian graduate junior employees. There is no single national graduate salary number: the collective agreement, occupation, duties, seniority, and normal company pay all matter.

This route is designed for a person who completed studies in Austria. A foreign degree from outside Austria may support a Blue Card, shortage-worker, Other Key Worker, or Very Highly Qualified route, but it does not create eligibility for the Austrian-graduate category.

What This Route Allows

The 12-month extension gives time to search for a qualification-matched job or prepare a business after study. Once the Red-White-Red Card is approved, it permits temporary settlement and work for the employer named in the application, generally for up to 24 months.

After at least 21 months of qualifying employment during the preceding 24 months, the holder may apply for a Red-White-Red Card plus. That later title gives unrestricted Austrian labor-market access. Five years of qualifying lawful settlement can eventually support Long-term Resident–EU if the separate integration and residence conditions are satisfied.

Family members can use the applicable family-reunification process, but they file separately and their title is not created by the graduate's approval alone.

What This Route Is Not

It is not a general post-study visa for anyone who attended a short Austrian course. The completed program must fit the official higher-education categories. It is also not an indefinite job-search period: the special renewal is for 12 months.

The Red-White-Red Card is not granted merely because the applicant graduated. A mismatched job, a role below the qualification level, or pay below locally customary graduate compensation can fail. The card is employer-tied initially and does not authorize any job with any employer.

This is not the same as starting a business during the search period. A graduate who chooses entrepreneurship must still obtain the residence and business authorization appropriate to the actual activity.

Next Steps

  1. Obtain final Austrian completion evidence and confirm whether any compulsory post-study training must be completed first.
  2. If no suitable offer exists, file the one-time 12-month student-permit renewal before the current permit expires. Prepare insurance and support evidence for that period.
  3. Search for roles whose duties genuinely use the level and field of the Austrian qualification.
  4. Ask the employer to identify the applicable collective agreement and explain why the salary is locally customary for comparable Austrian graduates.
  5. Check whether the occupation is regulated and begin professional recognition if required.
  6. Prepare the passport, photo, Austrian degree records, contract, employer declaration, insurance, and any other residence documents the authority requests.
  7. File the Red-White-Red Card application through the responsible Austrian residence authority while lawfully entitled to do so. Do not assume a pending filing extends a status that is about to expire.
  8. Once employed, keep payroll and employment evidence for the later 21-of-24-month Red-White-Red Card plus test.
