If you are starting an innovative company in Austria, you may qualify for a Red-White-Red Card as a Start-up Founder. The business must bring a new product, service, process, or technology to market. You need a sound plan, control over management, enough qualifying capital, and at least 50 points.

Business
An innovative Austrian company that you actively control
Capital
At least €30,000, with at least half provided as ownership capital rather than debt
Points and plan
At least 50 points and a credible business plan

Summary

Austria's start-up founder route is for founders launching an innovative company in Austria with a real business plan, controlling influence, qualifying capital, and enough points. It is designed for new products, services, processes, or technologies.

The current minimum company capital is €30,000, with at least half supplied as equity. An additional €50,000 of investment capital can earn bonus points, but it is not the baseline minimum. The route is designed for an active founder; a passive shareholder or a conventional local business without an innovative element should use a different analysis. The initial Red-White-Red Card is generally issued for up to 24 months and authorizes the approved self-employed start-up activity.

Innovation, founder control, capital, and points all matter
  1. Define the innovative Austrian business Prepare a credible plan supported by market and implementation evidence.
  2. Document management control and qualifying capital Distinguish the baseline capital requirement from any separate bonus-point investment.
  3. Prove the points and submit the founder case Support the full application with qualifications, experience, and project records.

Transferring the minimum capital alone does not qualify a passive shareholder or conventional business.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

The founder must establish a new Austrian company and personally exercise controlling influence over its management. Articles of association, voting rights, management powers, and the ownership structure should support that control. A minority investor with no meaningful decision power will not fit merely because they supplied funds.

The business plan must explain the innovation, market need, competitors, commercialization, financing, revenue, team, and Austrian operations. “Innovative” is a substantive assessment; adding an app or online ordering to an ordinary business does not automatically qualify.

The company must have at least €30,000 in capital, at least 50% equity. The evidence should show the capital is real, available, lawfully sourced, and committed to the company.

The applicant must score 50 points. Points are available for education or special know-how, relevant work experience, specified German or other language skills, age up to 35, additional investment capital of at least €50,000, and admission to an Austrian business incubator or funding by an Austrian start-up agency. Documents must support every claimed item; a calculator result is not an approval.

The general passport, health-insurance, immigration entry requirements, and residence requirements also apply. The authority may request recent criminal records from the country of citizenship and countries where the applicant recently lived for more than six months.

What This Route Allows

The card permits temporary settlement and the self-employed founder activity described in the approved plan. It lets the founder establish and run the Austrian company; it is not tied to an outside employer.

After the first two years, a qualifying founder can receive a Red-White-Red Card plus if the legal requirements are met. That title permits both self-employment and employed work without limitation to one employer. The authority will look at whether the company and residence facts continue to support the transition.

Qualifying family members may apply separately under Austria's family-reunification rules. Longer-term settlement remains subject to Austria's general continuity, integration, support, and absence requirements.

What This Route Is Not

It is not an investor residence route based only on transferring €30,000. Capital, innovation, founder control, a credible plan, and 50 points are independent requirements.

It is not the Self-employed Key Worker route. That route has no points test and instead asks whether the activity produces a wider macroeconomic benefit through substantial capital, jobs, technology, or regional importance. A standard franchise, consultancy, property holding company, or small shop may fit neither category without additional qualifying facts.

It is not permission to work in any outside job during the initial period. The approved purpose is the start-up founder activity.

Next Steps

  1. Define the innovation in plain, testable terms: what is new, for whom, compared with which alternatives, and how it will reach market.
  2. Build a detailed Austrian business plan with market evidence, milestones, financial forecasts, staffing, intellectual property, and implementation risks.
  3. Structure at least €30,000 in company capital with at least half equity, and document lawful source and availability. Distinguish baseline capital from the separate €50,000 bonus-point investment.
  4. Document controlling influence through ownership, voting, management, and company agreements.
  5. Calculate the 50-point score and obtain degrees, work references, recognized language certificates, incubator or funding contracts, and investment evidence.
  6. Check Austrian company registration, trade licensing, tax, and regulated-profession requirements.
  7. File personally through the responsible Austrian representation or, after lawful entry where permitted, with the responsible residence authority. Expect detailed review of the business and innovation evidence.
  8. Operate consistently with the approved plan and keep records for the two-year Red-White-Red Card plus review.
