Summary
The Training visa (Subclass 407) permits structured occupational training or professional development in Australia for up to 2 years. It is for improving skills, meeting registration requirements or building professional capacity—not filling an ordinary job vacancy.
An approved temporary activities sponsor normally puts forward the training position through a formal nomination and submits a detailed program. A Commonwealth agency sponsor can be exempt from the nomination step.
-
Choose the permitted training type Identify the registration requirement, occupational skill gap, or overseas development need.
-
Arrange sponsorship and the training plan Set out supervision, learning goals, tasks, assessment, and the timetable.
-
Apply after the required approvals Follow the approved training and workplace conditions.
The visa cannot be used simply to fill an ordinary vacancy or pay less for normal work.
Eligibility
The applicant normally must be at least 18, meet the official Functional English standard, genuinely need the training, have adequate health insurance and financial support, and meet health and character rules. The sponsor and any required nomination must be approved before the visa application.
Home Affairs recognizes three broad training types:
- training required for registration in Australia or the applicant's home country;
- training to improve skills in an eligible occupation, usually involving recent relevant experience and a structured workplace program; and
- capacity building overseas, meaning developing skills for use overseas, including training connected to an overseas qualification, government-supported training or professional development for overseas managers and professionals.
The program must be tailored to the applicant, workplace-based and supervised. It should state learning objectives, tasks, trainers, time allocation, assessment and why ordinary employment or study would not meet the need.
The applicant must be able to show genuine plans for a temporary stay and all conditions. Family can sometimes be included, with separate financial, health and character evidence.
What This Route Allows
The holder can undertake the approved training or professional-development activity for the period granted, up to 2 years, and travel while the visa is valid. Work that is an essential part of the approved training may be performed under the visa's conditions. All work must be paid under Australian workplace rules.
The experience may later support professional registration or another visa application, but it creates no automatic permanent route.
What This Route Is Not
Subclass 407 is not a general work visa, internship label or way to pay a lower wage for a normal productive role. The training—not the employer's labor need—must be the primary purpose.
It is not an unrestricted study visa. Classroom study can support a workplace plan, but a person whose main purpose is an academic course may need Subclass 500.
Nomination approval does not guarantee the visa, and visa grant does not guarantee professional registration. The relevant licensing body makes its own decision.
Next Steps
- Identify which of the three official training types fits and the exact registration, skill or capacity gap.
- Find an approved sponsor able to deliver and supervise the program.
- Prepare a person-specific training plan with objectives, timetable, tasks, supervision and assessment.
- Check whether the occupation list, recent-experience rule, government support or overseas-employer requirements apply to that training type.
- Confirm Functional English, funds, insurance, health and character evidence.
- Wait for sponsorship and any required nomination approval before submitting the visa application.
- Check workplace rights and make sure ordinary productive work stays secondary to the approved training.
