Belgium Work Residence Permit for Trainees
At a glance
If you have a higher-education degree or are studying for one, a structured professional traineeship with an eligible Belgian host may support residence and work permission. This has different rules from ordinary employment and compulsory placements already covered by student status.
- Host
- Belgian employer or host entity
- Education
- Higher-education degree completed or in progress
- Training agreement
- A signed educational training plan connected to your qualifications or studies
Summary
A Belgian traineeship can support residence where the placement genuinely develops the skills of someone with a higher-education degree or studying toward one. The host needs a signed agreement and training plan connected to those studies or qualifications, plus the required support and insurance arrangements.
The host files a combined work and residence application with the relevant region, normally while the trainee is outside the EU. A normal job cannot qualify simply by being called an internship. The authorized training period controls the stay, and permission should not be assumed renewable or usable for a later job.
-
Confirm a genuine professional traineeship Distinguish structured training from ordinary employment or a student-placement exemption.
-
Prepare the region’s required training agreement Match the higher-education background and host evidence to the placement.
-

Ordinary employment after the placement requires its own permission; a trainee title is not an open work permit.
Eligibility
A complete file generally requires:
- A completed higher-education degree or current studies leading to one.
- A Belgian employer or host entity and a signed training agreement.
- A training plan that is genuinely educational and connected to the applicant's qualifications or studies.
- A valid passport and proof of the applicable fee.
- Sufficient resources for subsistence and return travel, or an accepted host guarantee.
- Suitable housing where the host provides housing.
- Health insurance covering all risks in Belgium.
- A medical certificate and, for an adult, a criminal-record extract no more than six months old.
- A host undertaking to reimburse public costs if the trainee remains illegally.
Documents outside German, English, French, or Dutch need a legalized translation into one of those languages. The authorities have up to 90 days to decide a complete application.
More about this route
The Belgian host files a combined work-and-residence application with the region responsible for the application. The trainee normally must remain outside the EU when the initial application is submitted. A person already holding a valid Belgian long-stay authorization can use the stated in-country exception.
The authorization is limited to the traineeship and cannot exceed six months. Whether a renewal is possible within that cap depends on the region responsible for the application.
What This Route Allows
Approval authorizes residence and work only within the covered traineeship. After entry, the trainee registers with the commune within eight working days. Annex 49 can allow the approved traineeship to begin while the A card is produced after the address check.
If the employer later wants to hire the person as an ordinary employee, it must obtain the proper Single Permit before that employment begins.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a six-month general work permit, an internship label for a normal vacancy, or a route for remaining after the training ends. The training agreement, educational purpose, and host obligations must be genuine.
It is not automatically renewable. Even where the region allows renewal, the official maximum and authorized training duration still control.
Next Steps
- Confirm that the placement is a professional traineeship rather than ordinary employment or a student placement covered by another exemption.
- Identify the region responsible for the application and obtain its training-agreement and work-side requirements.
- Document the completed or ongoing higher education and its connection to the traineeship.
- Agree who provides resources, housing, insurance, and the required host financial undertakings.
- Have the host file the complete application at least 90 days before the intended start where possible.
- After approval abroad, obtain the D visa and register with the commune within eight working days.
- If ordinary employment is offered, start the Single Permit process early and do not work beyond the trainee authorization.
