Summary

Belize’s Temporary Employment Permit covers approved local employment and certain self-employed activities. An employee applies while already lawfully in the country with the required passport and visa. The employer submits the Labor Department file, including the recruitment, business, and tax records, while the worker supplies police records, qualifications, and any required professional license.

After the Labor Department approves the application, Immigration’s tax, payment, and permit-issuance steps must be completed before work starts. The category determines the term, which can be one week or less, one crop season, or a year. Self-employed applicants follow a separate process.

Labor approval and the issued employment permit are separate steps
  1. Keep lawful residence and identify the filer The employer files for an employee; a genuinely self-employed foreigner files for themself.
  2. Complete the Labor application Supply the work-category, recruitment, qualification and employer or business evidence.
  3. Complete Immigration’s issuance steps Follow the tax-letter, payment and passport procedure before relying on the permit.

An application or job offer does not authorize work. The issued permit covers the specified employment and period, while lawful stay must be maintained separately.

Eligibility

The starting requirements are:

An employee should have a real employer and proposed job before treating the case as ready for a permit application. Interviewing or looking for work can make the route worth exploring, but it is not approval and does not allow the person to start work.

Employer filing

The Labor portal accepts applications from an authorized representative of a registered entity such as a limited company, sole-owner business, partnership, overseas business, diplomatic agency, nonprofit, NGO, or educational organization. A self-employed Belizean may also apply for a foreigner they intend to hire.

The employer-profile records can include incorporation and registration documents, certificate of good standing, trade license, tax number, business plan for a new business, and six months of local bank transactions for a new business. The individual worker's application list includes:

The advertisements are required documents shown by the official portal. They should not be simplified into a universal promise that every case will pass a single labor-market formula; the Labor Department reviews the actual category and evidence.

Self-employed filing

A self-employed foreigner applies only for themself. The portal's profile list includes a business plan, six months of transactions in a local bank account, land title or lease, an updated land-payment receipt, and marriage, common-law, child, and spouse-status records where they apply. The application may also require the passport, both police records, advertisements, qualifications, professional license, and support letters.

Self-employed applicants need detailed business records. Describing oneself as a freelancer, consultant, or company owner is not enough. The Belize activity, premises or land evidence, banking record, registrations, tax position, and any professional authorization must match what is actually proposed.

Categories, duration, and fees

The current Immigration table includes professional, technical, general, seasonal agricultural, self-employed, agricultural self-employed, entertainment, religious/cultural/educational volunteer, import/export trader, peddler, waitress, and domestic categories. Immigration says waitress and domestic permits are issued only in exceptional cases.

Most listed categories receive a one-year permit. Seasonal agricultural work is for one crop season, and entertainment categories are for one week or less. The displayed fee varies by category, from BZD 150 for seasonal agricultural work to BZD 3,000 for professional, technical, and certain self-employed work, with other categories in between. Confirm the live classification and fee rather than choosing the lowest-looking label.

What This Route Allows

Once issued, the permit authorizes the work and period stated in it. After Labor approval, Immigration directs the applicant to obtain the required Income Tax Letter, pay the permit fee, present the valid passport and proof of payment, and receive the permit. Immigration then directs the person to the Social Security Office to apply for a card.

The permit can support lawful employment while valid. A person who remains legally resident in Belize for at least one year, spends no more than 14 total days abroad in that qualifying year, remains financially stable, and meets the other requirements may separately apply for permanent residence. The work permit does not automatically convert; it can be part of the evidence showing lawful residence, work, income, tax, and Social Security history.

What This Route Is Not

A TEP is not:

If Labor denies the application, Immigration instructs the applicant to collect the denial letter and report to Immigration to update legal status. A denial does not extend the person's existing visa or create time to work. Likewise, submitting a permanent-residence application does not replace the need to keep the current work and immigration authorization valid until a new status is granted.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm who needs to apply. An employee needs a Belize employer that will file; a self-employed foreigner files only for themself.
  2. Keep legal stay valid. Check the passport, visa, visitor extension, or other immigration document before starting the Labor application.
  3. Classify the work correctly. Compare the duties, qualifications, industry, and duration with Immigration's current categories and fee table.
  4. Create the employer profile. Upload the entity, license, tax, good-standing, banking, and new-business records that apply through the official Labor portal.
  5. Prepare your personal and work records. Scan the complete passport, obtain both police records, run and retain the three advertisements, and gather qualifications, licenses, intent, and support letters.
  6. For self-employment, prove an operating Belize plan. Prepare the business plan, local banking history, land or lease records, payment receipt, and any relevant family-status records before applying.
  7. Wait for the Labor decision. Immigration says the Labor Department contacts the applicant within 30 days; do not begin work based on that stated target.
  8. Complete issuance after approval. Collect the approval letter, attend Immigration, obtain the Income Tax Letter, pay the confirmed fee, present the required records, and then register with Social Security.
  9. Track expiry and long-term plans. Apply for any renewal or replacement in time and assess permanent residence separately against its one-year, 14-day, financial, criminal, medical, and interview rules.
