- Basic German and a host family meeting the German-language rules
Summary
Germany’s au pair permission supports a temporary cultural exchange with a German-speaking host family. The applicant helps with childcare and light household tasks while improving German. This arrangement is different from an ordinary domestic job.
Applicants who need work authorization must be aged 18 to 26 and have basic German. The host must meet the language rules; where German is the family’s regular rather than native language, the au pair generally cannot come from the host parents’ home country. Placements normally last six months to one year.
Eligibility
You generally need:
- To be at least 18 when the placement starts and under 27 when applying.
- Basic German, normally around A1.
- A written au pair contract with a qualifying host family in Germany.
- A genuine family and cultural-exchange arrangement involving childcare and light household help.
- Suitable health and accident insurance and the usual passport and residence documents.
- Federal Employment Agency approval where required; this is normally handled inside the visa process.
Official Federal Employment Agency guidance limits au pair duties, including childcare, to 30 hours per week and generally six hours per day. The host arrangement should also cover a private room, meals, pocket money, time off, insurance, and an opportunity to attend a German course under the current official au pair terms.
Germany does not permit repeated au pair employment simply because the first stay was shorter than one year. Applicants with an earlier German au pair stay should obtain case-specific confirmation.
-
Check age, language, and the host Confirm the applicant's age, basic German, and the family's qualifying language and nationality circumstances.
-
Review the written placement Check duties, hours, room, food, insurance, time off, and language-course support.
-
Apply with the agreed documents Prepare the contract, host questionnaire, language evidence, and required visa records.
This is cultural exchange with limited household duties. Federal Employment Agency approval is handled where required within the relevant process.
What This Route Allows
The residence permit allows the approved au pair placement for no more than one year. It provides temporary residence with the host family and the limited duties described in the au pair agreement.
After the placement, a person may apply for a different residence purpose, such as study, vocational training, or a qualifying language course, if all conditions for that new route are independently met. A change is not automatic.
What This Route Is Not
This is not permission to work as a full-time nanny, elder-care worker, cleaner, or employee in the host family's business. Care of a person requiring professional nursing and unrelated commercial work are outside the au pair arrangement.
It is not a renewable path to permanent residence by itself. The maximum one-year au pair period cannot simply be extended for the same purpose.
The age and host-language rules are part of the work authorization, not optional preferences of a placement agency.
Next Steps
- Confirm that you will be under 27 on the application date and can show basic German.
- Check that the host family's language and nationality circumstances fit Section 12.
- Use the official au pair contract and review the hours, duties, room, food, pocket money, time off, insurance, and language-course support before signing.
- Prepare the host-family questionnaire, contract, language evidence, insurance evidence, and the documents requested by the responsible German mission.
- Apply for the national visa before travel unless your nationality is specifically allowed to apply after visa-free entry.
- If you plan another German purpose after the placement, check that route early and apply before the au pair title expires.
