Summary
A bridge route for regulated or recognition-heavy careers. It lets applicants come to Germany to complete the missing practical or theoretical pieces needed for full professional recognition.
A related short route covers a skills analysis when the recognition authority cannot compare the qualification because documents are missing or insufficient and decides that practical assessment is appropriate.
-
Obtain the formal recognition assessment Have the responsible German authority identify the qualification differences or missing requirements.
-
Choose a measure addressing those gaps Secure enrollment or a workplace development plan aligned with the notice.
-
Prepare the residence application Document language, living costs, and the qualification-measure evidence.
The related skills-analysis route addresses a different situation: an authority-approved assessment when documents are insufficient for comparison.
Eligibility
For a qualification measure, you generally need:
- A formal German recognition notice identifying substantial differences or missing requirements.
- Registration for a suitable qualification measure that addresses those differences.
- A professional-development plan from the company if the measure is mainly workplace training.
- German ability normally at A2 or above; the program or regulated profession may require more.
- Proof of living costs. Official 2026 guidance lists at least €1,200 gross or €941 net monthly pay for a company-based measure, or €1,091 net per month for a school-based measure funded through a blocked account or declaration of commitment.
- Federal Employment Agency approval where workplace training or related employment requires it.
For a skills analysis, the responsible recognition body must first decide that the analysis is needed, and the applicant must have an accepted place for the assessment, suitable German, and living-cost support.
What This Route Allows
The recognition-measure permit is normally issued for up to 24 months and can be extended for up to 12 more months when needed, to a maximum of three years for this purpose.
The holder may take unrelated secondary work for up to 20 hours per week. Work in the occupational field connected to recognition may be allowed without that hourly limit when the Federal Employment Agency approves it.
A skills-analysis permit is limited to a maximum of six months.
After full recognition or receipt of the professional license, current Section 20 can allow up to 18 months to find qualifying employment if living costs are secured. If a suitable job, study place, or training place is already available, the person may apply directly for the corresponding residence permit.
What This Route Is Not
This is not the Recognition Partnership, which begins with a German employer and allows the formal recognition procedure to occur after entry. Section 16d(1) normally starts with a recognition authority's partial-recognition decision.
It is not a general study or work permit. The planned measure must address the deficits identified by the recognition authority.
Missing documents do not automatically qualify someone for a skills analysis; the responsible body must decide that this assessment is appropriate.
Next Steps
- Use the Recognition Finder to identify the authority responsible for the application and apply for recognition.
- Review the formal notice and select a measure that addresses every identified difference.
- Obtain enrollment or, for workplace measures, a detailed professional-development plan and pay information.
- Prepare German-language and living-cost proof using the current figures.
- Apply through the responsible German mission and allow the visa process to obtain any required Agency approval.
- After completing recognition, apply for Section 20 job search or the matching work title before the recognition permit expires.
