At a glance
Paid competitive work with an eligible German club or similar organization may qualify professional athletes, coaches, or esports professionals for a special work permit. Each category has specific rules; sporting talent alone does not establish eligibility.

- Age and pay

Summary
Germany’s sports employment route lets eligible professional athletes, coaches, and esports players take approved work there under rules specific to those fields. The applicant needs an eligible club or organization, the required official confirmation, and a contract meeting the category’s conditions. Evidence of sporting ability alone cannot replace the employment requirements.
For 2026, the official gross annual minimum salary for both the sports and esports routes is €50,700. The figure changes with the annual social-insurance calculation and should be checked for the application year.
Eligibility
For a professional athlete or coach, the main conditions are:
- At least 16 years old.
- Employment by a German sports club or comparable sporting institution that participates in competitive sport.
- Gross annual salary at or above the current threshold.
- Confirmation from the national governing body for the sport, in agreement with the German Olympic Sports Confederation, of the athlete's eligibility or the coach's professional competence.
For an esports professional, the main conditions are:
- At least 16 years old.
- Employment by a German esports club or comparable institution participating in competitive esports.
- Gross annual salary at or above the current threshold.
- Confirmation from the responsible national esports association that the activity is professional and the game or competition has substantial national or international importance.
In both cases, the role must pay more than a mere expense allowance. The applicant also needs the ordinary contract, passport, insurance, and residence documents.
-
Identify the competitive role Distinguish athlete, coach, or esports professional and confirm the qualifying institution.
-
Check age and pay Apply the current salary threshold and minimum-age requirement.
-
Obtain the correct professional confirmation Have the club coordinate the relevant governing-body or esports-association evidence.
-
Prepare the work-residence file Use the contract, professional record, identity, coverage, and employer documents.
These are narrow employment categories. General sporting talent or an informal club connection does not establish the full basis.
What This Route Allows
The residence permit permits the approved professional sports, coaching, or esports employment. Its duration and employer restriction depend on the contract and the issued title.
Because the special rule is tied to the club, competition, salary, and official confirmation, a change of club or a drop below the threshold should be checked with the foreigners authority before the change takes effect.
What This Route Is Not
This is not for amateur competition, recreational sport, unpaid coaching, streaming, casual esports work, or a role paid only through expenses.
It is not a substitute for an ordinary skilled-worker title where the actual job is in management, marketing, software, medicine, or another profession rather than participation or coaching under the special sports rule.
Meeting the salary figure alone is not enough; the club and governing-body confirmation are essential.
Next Steps
- Confirm whether the contract is for an athlete, coach, or esports professional and whether the institution participates in genuine competitive activity.
- Check the official minimum salary for the application year.
- Have the club obtain the required confirmation from the correct national governing body or esports association.
- Prepare the contract, professional record, confirmation, passport, health insurance, and employer documents.
- Ask the responsible German mission or foreigners authority how a future club or role change must be reported.
