Summary
Ecuador’s usual citizenship route requires three years of qualifying permanent residence, along with Spanish ability, knowledge of Ecuador, lawful financial support, and an approved application.
There are separate two-year routes for spouses or legally recognized partners of Ecuadorians, and for people officially recognized as refugees or stateless. For spouses and partners, the two years run from the qualifying marriage or Ecuadorian registration, rather than from permanent residence.
-
Choose the correct application category Ordinary permanent residence, spouse or partner, and refugee or stateless cases use different rules.
-
Calculate its qualifying period Check status, absences, and the Ecuadorian civil-registration date where relevant.
-
Complete the application and review Prepare the category’s documents and required evaluation or interview.
A residence or wedding anniversary alone does not grant citizenship. The date that starts the clock depends on the route.
Eligibility
For ordinary naturalization, the official procedure generally requires:
- current permanent residence in Ecuador;
- at least three years of lawful, continuous permanent residence;
- no more than 180 days outside Ecuador in each year during those first three years;
- the ability to speak and write Spanish;
- general knowledge of Ecuador's geography, history, culture, and current affairs;
- lawful financial support and compliance with relevant obligations;
- an interview and the required identity, migration, and criminal-record checks; and
- no applicable reason for refusal under the Human Mobility Law.
Time on temporary residence is not the ordinary three-year citizenship clock. The ability to apply for permanent residence after a qualifying temporary-residence period is a separate immigration process; permanent residence and citizenship do not arise automatically from the passage of time.
For the spouse or registered-partner basis, verify:
- the other person is an Ecuadorian citizen;
- the marriage or union is legally valid and registered in the form Ecuador accepts;
- the two-year marriage-or-registration period is complete;
- the applicant lives in Ecuador and holds a residence category accepted by the procedure;
- lawful financial support and compliance with obligations to the Ecuadorian state; and
- the relationship and all general records can be verified.
For the refugee or stateless-person basis, formal recognition in Ecuador matters. The exceptional mechanism asks for the Ecuadorian identity document, entry and exit records, a certificate showing the recognized status and its date, and proof of lawful financial support in Ecuador. Merely having an asylum claim pending does not equal the required recognized status.
The law and procedure contain exemptions and special treatment for some applicants, including particular age, disability, education, or protection situations. Do not assume that being over a stated age removes every Spanish requirement: confirm exactly which part of the evaluation is waived.
What This Route Allows
Approval makes the applicant an Ecuadorian citizen by naturalization. The person can register that status with the Civil Registry, obtain citizen identity and passport documents, live in Ecuador without an immigration permit, and exercise the rights of Ecuadorian citizens subject to constitutional rules.
Ecuadorian nationality is not lost simply because the person also holds or later acquires another nationality. The effect on an existing nationality is controlled by the other country's law, so applicants should check that separately.
Naturalization is more durable than residence, but it does not erase prior tax, criminal, family, military, or professional obligations. Ecuadorian citizenship and Ecuadorian tax residence are separate legal concepts.
What This Route Is Not
Citizenship is not automatic after three years of permanent residence or two years of marriage. You must apply through the correct process, complete the required interview or evaluation, and receive approval.
The spouse route has its own marriage or registration period. The ordinary route has a separate limit of 180 days abroad per year during its required permanent-residence period.
Criminal matters, false documents, removal history, or unresolved immigration issues need individual review. The 2025 reform changed the grounds for refusal; a general claim of a “clean record” does not settle those questions.
Next Steps
- Identify the exact route: ordinary permanent resident, Ecuadorian spouse or registered partner, or recognized refugee/stateless person.
- Obtain an official migration-movement record and calculate the relevant period using the status and absence rule for that route.
- For a spouse or partner case, verify the Ecuadorian civil-registration date; do not count only from a foreign ceremony if the official rule starts at registration in Ecuador.
- Download the current official procedure sheet and build a document checklist. Confirm apostille/legalization, translation, issue-date, and criminal-record rules before ordering documents.
- For the ordinary route, prepare honestly for the Spanish and Ecuador-knowledge evaluation and interview. Ask the Ministry in writing before relying on an exemption.
- Resolve discrepancies in names, dates, migration records, taxes, social-security records, or civil status before filing.
- File with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility through its current channel, keep residence valid, and report relevant changes while the case is pending.
- After approval, complete Civil Registry and passport steps.
