Ecuador Work Visa for Qualified Professionals
At a glance
Ecuador’s professional residence route is for people with a professional, technical, technologist, or artisan qualification recognized by the relevant Ecuadorian authority. Qualification recognition comes before relying on this route; professional licensing may still be needed.

Summary
If Ecuador recognizes your professional, technical, technologist, or artisan qualification, you may be able to apply for temporary residence through that qualification. The route is not limited to university graduates and does not depend on having an Ecuadorian job offer.
For most foreign higher-education qualifications, you first need recognition and registration through SENESCYT, Ecuador’s higher-education authority. Artisan qualifications use the relevant artisan authority. Recognition and the residence application are separate steps.
-
Identify your qualification Check whether your professional, technical, technologist or artisan qualification fits the official category.
-
Complete the recognition process Have the relevant Ecuadorian authority recognize your qualification or confirm your artisan status.
-
Apply for residence Include proof of recognition, identity documents, and evidence of how you will support yourself.
A recognized qualification is the key requirement. Residence approval does not replace any separate license you need to practice your profession.
Eligibility
A qualification Ecuador recognizes
The category covers professional university qualifications, technical or technologist higher-education qualifications, other foreign qualifications comparable to a recognized Ecuadorian level, and accepted artisan qualifications or status.
For higher education, SENESCYT generally asks for your identity document, the original or certified qualification, authentication by apostille or consular legalization, and supporting course or subject records. The institution must be recognized or accredited in its home system, and the qualification must match an accepted Ecuadorian level. Extra academic or institution records may be needed.
Documents for residence
You generally need:
- Official proof of the required recognition or registration.
- Proof of how you will lawfully support yourself.
- A valid passport and current immigration status.
- The required identity and criminal-record documents.
- Any health-coverage evidence required by the process.
- Accepted translations and authentication of foreign records.
The checklist uses the Ministry’s financial-support rules rather than a fixed monthly salary. The documents depend on how you pay your living costs.
Recognition of a qualification does not automatically license you to practice. Healthcare, law, education, engineering, and other regulated work may need professional registration, supervised practice, or another approval.
What This Route Allows
Approval gives temporary residence in Ecuador based on the recognized qualification. Current law generally allows temporary residence for up to two years and provides for renewal when the legal requirements remain satisfied.
The route does not depend on one sponsoring employer in the same way as the employee residence category. A resident may undertake lawful employment, independent activity, or business activity when they also comply with Ecuadorian labor, tax, company, municipal, and professional-licensing rules.
Eligible family members may apply through the relevant family rules, with their own civil and general documents. The temporary residence can later be relevant to a separate permanent-residence application, but that status is not automatic.
Tax residence is separate from the immigration category. A long stay, Ecuador-centered economic interests, or family connections can trigger the SRI tax-residence rules.
What This Route Is Not
Experience alone or an unrecognized diploma does not qualify. The authorities must accept your qualification, and residence approval does not waive professional licensing or make you a permanent resident or citizen.
Ask SENESCYT which recognition service applies if you have distance-learning or joint qualifications, non-official university awards, an incomplete program, professional certificates, or records from a closed institution. A school’s claim to accreditation does not by itself settle recognition.
Next Steps
