Summary
If you have an Ecuadorian job, you can apply for employee residence using a public-sector appointment or a private employment contract registered with the Ministry of Labor. An informal offer or résumé alone is not enough.
A private employer must also provide the required tax, social-security, and company-compliance records. The visa checklist does not require it to prove that no local worker was available.
-
Confirm the public or private job Distinguish a public appointment from a private employment contract.
-
Obtain the required employer documents For a private job, arrange Ministry of Labor registration and the applicable employer-compliance certificates.
-
Prepare your residence application Add identity, lawful-status, qualification, and other required personal evidence.
An offer or résumé alone is insufficient. The registered contract and employer records must identify the actual employer.
Eligibility
You normally need one of these job documents:
- an official public-sector appointment or action documenting the position; or
- a genuine private employment contract with an Ecuadorian employer, registered with the Ministry of Labor.
For a private employment case, the employer should be ready to provide the company and compliance records listed in the current procedure, including applicable SRI, IESS, and Companies-authority certificates. The records must identify the actual employer and be current in the form the visa office accepts.
The applicant also generally needs:
- a valid passport and lawful immigration status;
- the signed and registered employment evidence;
- required identity and criminal-record documents;
- foreign documents apostilled or legalized and translated where required;
- proof of lawful financial support when requested under the general protocol; and
- any health-coverage or registration evidence required by the current process.
An interview or active job search can make this route worth planning, but you still need the required job and documents before applying. An informal contractor agreement, volunteer position, unpaid promise, foreign remote job, or unregistered cash arrangement is not the Ecuadorian employee relationship described by the procedure.
The employment contract must comply with Ecuadorian labor law, including any applicable wage and social-security obligations. The 2026 unified basic salary is USD $482, but the visa checklist does not create one universal immigration salary threshold for every job; lawful pay can also depend on hours, occupation, collective rules, and employment terms.
What This Route Allows
Approval gives temporary residence in Ecuador on the basis of your employment. Current law generally allows temporary residence for up to two years and provides for renewal when the applicant continues to meet the applicable rules.
The worker can live in Ecuador and perform the documented lawful employment. The employer must comply with labor and IESS duties, and the employee will generally have Ecuadorian tax and social-security obligations arising from the work.
Eligible family members may apply through the relevant family rules with their own relationship and general documents. Temporary residence may later support a separate permanent-residence application if the law's conditions are met; it does not become permanent automatically.
Changing employers or losing the job can affect your residence. If the job, activity, or sponsor supporting the visa changes, the regulation requires a new temporary-visa application within 30 working days to preserve continuous residence. Confirm the correct process with the Ministry before changing jobs.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a job-search, foreign remote-work, or freelance route. You need the specific Ecuadorian employment relationship and the required registered contract or public appointment.
An employer’s willingness to sign a letter is not enough. Its legal identity, contract registration, and compliance records must match. You must also meet any professional licensing requirements for regulated work.
Residence approval does not remove tax, social-security, or labor duties, and it does not give permanent residence or citizenship.
Next Steps
- Obtain the exact legal name and registration details of the Ecuadorian employer and identify whether the position is public or private.
- Give the employer the current official procedure before relying on the offer. Confirm who will prepare the contract registration and compliance certificates.
- For a private job, verify that the contract is registered with the Ministry of Labor and that the employer can obtain the required SRI, IESS, and Companies-authority evidence.
- Confirm that the role, salary, hours, benefits, and start date comply with Ecuadorian labor law. Keep a copy of every signed and registered document.
- If the occupation is regulated, complete the separate recognition of qualifications or professional authorization process.
- Prepare current passport, criminal-record, immigration-status, translation/legalization, and any health or proof of lawful financial support using the official checklist.
- Apply online through the Ministry’s e-VISAS platform. Do not start work unlawfully while waiting for an immigration or labor step.
- After approval, confirm identity-card, IESS enrollment, payroll withholding, and SRI duties.
- Ask Cancillería before changing employer, ending the contract, or relying on this status for a later permanent-residence filing.
