Summary

If you have a place in eligible higher education or post-compulsory secondary education lasting more than 90 days, you may qualify for Spain's long-stay study permission. Rules effective May 20, 2025 give student mobility, volunteering, and certain other training their own categories.

Higher education includes recognized university and non-university programs leading to a recognized higher-education qualification. Post-compulsory secondary study includes specified upper-secondary, intermediate vocational, arts, and sports programs. Admission to a recognized full-time program and payment of enrollment or tuition rights are required; merely planning to apply is not enough.

Higher-education authorization normally covers the full study program. Post-compulsory secondary authorization is capped at one year. Validity extends from one month before studies until 15 days after they end.

Confirm the education category before assembling the application
  1. Check the recognized full-time program Identify the higher-education or post-compulsory secondary category.
  2. Secure admission and enrollment-payment evidence Plan the filing date around the course start and any current-status deadline.
  3. Prepare funds, insurance, and the student file Calculate maintenance separately from tuition and complete any required post-entry identity-card step.

Work rights depend on the authorization and its conditions. Other educational activities may use different procedures.

Eligibility

Admission and timing

For higher education, the applicant generally must be at least 17 and admitted to a recognized institution for a full-time program leading to a recognized qualification. For post-compulsory secondary education, the applicant must generally be at least 18 and admitted to an authorized full-time program. Non-university programs must deliver at least 50% of teaching in person. Applicants age 17 should check their consulate's additional requirements.

An application should normally be submitted at least two months before studies begin. Filing from inside Spain is available only in the situations stated in the official sheet: an adult legally present can file for higher education, while a person filing in Spain for post-compulsory secondary education must hold residence and meet the remaining-validity rule. Applicants must also respect the two-month timing before their current lawful status expires, subject to stated exceptions.

Funds, insurance, and documents

The student needs monthly maintenance funds equal to 100% of IPREM. The first accompanying family member requires 75% and each additional member 50%. Amounts used to pay tuition do not count as maintenance funds. Fully prepaid housing can reduce the relevant maintenance calculation when properly documented.

Health insurance must be with an insurer authorized in Spain and provide benefits similar to the basic common service package of Spain's National Health System. For a stay over six months, an adult normally needs criminal-record evidence for Spain and countries of residence during the preceding five years. Medical, passport, public-health, and entry-ban rules also apply. Foreign documents may need legalization (official checks confirming a document's origin for use abroad)/apostille (a certificate verifying an official signature or seal for use abroad) and official translation.

What This Route Allows

A higher-education authorization automatically permits compatible employment and self-employment without a separate work application. Work must remain secondary to study and normally may not exceed 30 hours per week. Geographic limits and special rules in the regulation still apply.

Other student/training authorizations do not all have automatic work rights; they may require the separate access-to-employment procedure. Curricular placements that form part of the authorized program are treated under their own rule.

Only a higher-education student can bring the family members covered by this student-family procedure: a spouse or qualifying partner, qualifying children, and in specified disability cases a support person. The student must have at least 90 days left, and the family must meet relationship, funds, insurance, record, and public-order requirements. Student family members are not authorized to work.

Student status is legally a stay (estancia), not ordinary residence. It does not ordinarily count toward national long-term residence, and it is not treated like residence for Spanish nationality by residence. Separate post-study job-search, business-project, or modification routes may be available after qualifying studies.

What This Route Is Not

Next Steps

  1. Ask the institution to identify the official program and qualification and confirm whether it is higher or post-compulsory secondary education under Hoja 1.
  2. Obtain formal admission and proof that required enrollment or tuition rights were paid.
  3. File early enough to meet both the study-start and current-status timing rules.
  4. Calculate maintenance funds separately from tuition: 100% IPREM for the student, 75% for the first family member, and 50% for each additional member.
  5. Arrange qualifying insurance and the required passport, criminal-record, medical, and family documents.
  6. If the authorization exceeds six months, request the TIE within one month after entry.
  7. Before accepting work, confirm compatibility, the 30-hour ceiling, and whether the authorization grants automatic work rights.
  8. Plan any post-study modification before the student authorization expires.
