Summary

This is a family residence route for people joining or staying with a French citizen in France. The exact documents depend on whether you are a spouse, parent, child, or dependent older relative.

EU/EEA/Swiss family rules, family reunification with a non-French foreign sponsor, adoption, asylum-family reunification, and private-and-family-life cases outside the listed categories follow different procedures.

Each French-citizen family category needs different proof
  1. Identify spouse, child, parent or dependent ancestor Check the exact relationship, the French citizen’s status and any age or dependency condition.
  2. Complete the relationship-specific evidence For example, prove marriage transcription and shared life, actual support of a French child, or genuine financial dependency.
  3. Use the correct visa and residence sequence Confirm the procedure for the applicant’s location and the rights attached to the document issued.

This is separate from standard family reunification with a foreign resident. PACS, informal partnership and financial independence do not automatically meet a listed French-citizen family category.

Eligibility

EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

Spouse of a French citizen

The marriage must be legally valid. If celebrated abroad, it generally must be transcribed into the French register of births, marriages, and other family events. The French spouse must remain French, and the couple must show a genuine shared married life. A PACS or unmarried partnership is not treated as marriage for the automatic spouse visa category, although private-and-family-life evidence may be relevant under another rule.

Parent of a French child

The child is generally a minor, French, and resident in France. The foreign parent must normally show real contribution to the child's maintenance and upbringing since birth or for the period required by law. A name on a birth certificate without an actual parental role may not be enough.

Child of a French citizen

The route generally covers a child under 21 or an older child who is genuinely dependent on the French parent. Parentage, the French parent's nationality, age, custody where relevant, and dependency must be documented.

Dependent older relative

A dependent parent, grandparent, or other direct older ancestor may qualify where the relationship and actual financial dependence on the French citizen or the citizen's spouse are proved. Owning property or merely receiving occasional gifts is not necessarily enough. Health coverage and support arrangements can be important.

Special rules and bilateral agreements can change the process for Algerian citizens and some other nationalities. Use the France-Visas assistant for the applicant's exact circumstances.

What This Route Allows

Depending on the category, an applicant abroad can receive a long-stay family visa and then a vie privée et familiale residence document. The spouse and parent-of-French-child categories generally allow employment without a separate employer work authorization once the correct residence status is valid.

Renewal and later multi-year or resident-card eligibility depend on continued family facts, legal stay, and the rules for the specific permit. A family visa does not make the holder French; marriage and residence may support a separate citizenship-through-marriage route later.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a broad sponsorship route for siblings, adult independent children, cousins, nieces, nephews, or non-dependent parents. Those people need another immigration basis unless exceptional private-and-family-life facts apply.

It is not a substitute for proving that the family relationship is legally recognized. A religious-only marriage, untranscribed foreign marriage, disputed parentage, or informal dependency may require additional legal steps.

It also is not standard regroupement familial, which is mainly for the spouse and minor children of a non-French foreign resident already established in France.

Next Steps

  1. Identify the exact relationship category and confirm that the French relative currently holds French nationality.
  2. Obtain full birth, marriage, parentage, custody, and nationality records. Transcribe a foreign marriage or birth into French records where required.
  3. For a spouse, build current evidence of shared married life. For a parent, document the child's residence and ongoing support/upbringing. For a child or older relative, document age and real dependency.
  4. Confirm where the French citizen lives or will live and prepare housing and support evidence.
  5. Use France-Visas to obtain the visa category and country-specific checklist; do not rely on a general family invitation letter.
  6. After arrival, complete VLS-TS validation or apply for the required residence card within the stated deadline.
  7. Before renewal, keep relationship, shared-life, parental-contribution, or dependency evidence current.
