France Talent Visa for Medical Professionals
At a glance
Certain health professionals who are not EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens can use France's Talent – medical and pharmacy professions permit for a qualifying paid job. You must also have the French permission required to practice your profession. The residence permit does not replace professional licensing or approval under the French Public Health Code.
- Professional approval
- French assignment, temporary-practice certificate, or authorization to practice
- Pay
- Currently at least €41,386.48 gross per year
- Limits
- The route does not authorize medical or pharmacy practice without the required French professional approval.
Summary
France’s Talent medical and pharmacy category allows qualifying professionals to live there for an accepted assignment. It combines the required pay with French practice authorization or another listed professional document. An overseas medical or pharmacy qualification does not by itself authorize practice. Resolve the professional approval before treating the immigration file as ready.
-
Obtain the required French practice document Secure the accepted assignment decision, temporary-practice certificate, or authorization to practice.
-
Match the role and pay Confirm that the institution, duties, dates, and current salary threshold fit the professional authorization and Talent category.
-
Apply for the appropriate permission Follow the visa or residence process for your location and planned duration, using the professional and employment evidence.
A foreign license or pending recognition application alone is insufficient. Immigration approval does not replace French professional-practice requirements.
Eligibility
EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
The main requirements are:
- A profession covered by the category. The applicant must fall within the medical or pharmacy professions covered by the Talent provision, not simply work somewhere in healthcare.
- French permission to practice. The applicant needs a decision of assignment, a document authorizing temporary practice, or a full authorization to practice under the Public Health Code. Being licensed in another country, holding a medical degree, or starting a recognition application is not by itself the final required French document.
- A qualifying French role. The employment or appointment must match the professional authorization and identify the establishment, duties, dates, and pay.
- The salary threshold. Gross annual pay must meet the current €41,386.48 floor. The contract and employer records should show qualifying guaranteed pay clearly.
- The normal immigration file. This generally includes the professional-practice document, employer or placement documents, pay evidence, passport and current-status records, a recent French address, and the signed commitment to respect the principles of the French Republic.
Professional authorization can be the most time-consuming part. The correct process depends on the profession, where the qualification was earned, nationality, prior practice, and the type of French role. Applicants should use the relevant French health authority or professional body rather than assume that immigration approval will cure a licensing gap.
EU/EEA and Swiss citizens usually rely on free movement for immigration, but they can still need French recognition and professional authorization. Algerian and other nationality-specific arrangements may affect immigration procedure without removing health-profession rules.
More about this route
The applicant must have one of the accepted French documents: a placement or assignment decision, a certificate permitting temporary practice, or an authorization to practice. The role must also meet the category's minimum salary.
Current Service-Public guidance, verified on 1 June 2026, sets that floor at €41,386.48 gross per year, linked to the second step of the pay scale for associated practitioners. The amount should be rechecked before filing.
What This Route Allows
The Talent card authorizes the holder to live in France and work in the qualifying medical or pharmacy role, subject to the scope of the professional authorization. The employer does not need the ordinary work authorization required for the standard employee route.
For a stay under one year, France may issue a long-stay visa that itself serves as the Talent residence permission. For a planned stay of at least one year, the person normally enters with the appropriate long-stay visa and applies online for the multi-year card. The Talent card can cover the documented professional period within the general maximum of four years.
An eligible spouse and minor children can use the simplified Talent-family process instead of ordinary family reunification. The spouse's Talent-family status authorizes work.
Qualifying residence may later contribute to long-term residence, but that is a separate five-year application with continuous-residence, absence, resource, insurance, language, and civic-integration tests.
What This Route Is Not
This route is not:
- a way to practice medicine or pharmacy without French authorization;
- available to every healthcare employee;
- satisfied by a foreign professional license alone;
- approved merely because a recognition or authorization application is pending;
- interchangeable with the ordinary employee route or EU Blue Card;
- permission to work outside the profession and authorization supporting the card; or
- automatic permanent residence or citizenship.
A pending authorization can justify exploring the pathway, but the case is not ready to proceed until the accepted French practice document and qualifying role are available.
Next Steps
- Identify the exact French regulated profession and the authority responsible for recognizing the applicant's qualification and practice rights.
- Obtain the correct placement decision, temporary-practice certificate, or authorization to practice before treating the immigration case as complete.
- Make sure the French role, institution, duties, start date, and duration match the professional authorization.
- Confirm that guaranteed gross annual pay meets the live Talent medical/pharmacy threshold.
- Collect the professional decision, contract or assignment, employer certificate, qualification records, and any required translations.
- Use the France-Visas assistant from abroad or ANEF for an eligible in-country application and follow the generated checklist.
- Keep professional-registration, authorization, payroll, employer, tax, and address records for renewal. Check immigration consequences before changing establishment or role.
