France Talent Visa for Researchers
At a glance
If you have at least a master's-level qualification and will research or teach at university level in France, the Talent – researcher permit may fit you. This route is for people who are not EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens. An approved research organization or university must sign a hosting agreement confirming your work in France.
- Qualification
- At least a master's-level degree
- Host
- Approved French research or higher-education organization
- Hosting agreement
- A signed agreement with the approved host covering the research or university teaching and the stay
Summary
France’s Talent researcher residence category is for research or university teaching under a hosting agreement supplied by an approved French institution. Doctoral candidates should confirm with the host whether their contract and funding support researcher status or the student route. General academic interest or admission alone does not decide that distinction.
-
Confirm the approved research host Check its authority to issue a hosting agreement and the applicant’s degree level.
-
Prepare the convention d’accueil Align the research or teaching, dates, host, funding, and any EU mobility program.
-
Choose the applicable researcher procedure Use the ordinary visa process or the specific mobility procedure when eligible.
An informal invitation or doctoral enrollment alone does not replace the required hosting agreement.
Eligibility
EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
The main requirements are:
- A master's-level degree or higher. The applicant must hold a diploma at least equivalent to a French master's degree.
- Qualifying work in France. The purpose must be to carry out research or provide university-level teaching.
- An approved host. The host must be a public or private organization approved for research or higher education.
- A signed hosting agreement. It must state that the applicant is a researcher and describe the purpose and duration of the stay. If EU research mobility is planned, it should identify the mobility program.
- Any applicable pay rule. Service-Public states that a €2,200 gross minimum applies to a researcher who has signed a specific research-stay agreement (convention de séjour de recherche). This should not be presented as a universal salary threshold for every Talent researcher; the host must identify which agreement and funding rules apply.
- The normal immigration file. This generally includes the degree, hosting agreement, passport and current-status records, recent French address evidence, and the signed commitment to respect the principles of the French Republic.
A doctorate is not required if the applicant has the master's-level qualification and otherwise qualifies. Conversely, holding a doctorate does not replace the approved French hosting agreement.
A researcher already holding a researcher status in another EU country can have a mobility route for carrying out part of the research in France. Current French guidance says a researcher coming for more than three months under that framework does not need a French long-stay visa, but the French residence procedure and mobility conditions still have to be followed.
More about this route
The hosting agreement identifies the researcher, host, work, and length of the French stay. If the researcher will participate in an EU mobility program, the agreement should say so.
This is not a route for someone who only wants to look for a research position. A real approved host and a qualifying hosting agreement are required before the application can be completed.
What This Route Allows
The Talent researcher permission allows the holder to live in France and perform the research or university-level teaching described in the hosting agreement. The French host does not need the ordinary employee work authorization.
For a stay under one year, France may issue a long-stay visa that itself serves as the Talent residence permission. For a planned stay of at least one year, the person normally enters with the appropriate long-stay visa and applies online for the multi-year card. The card can match the hosting period within the general four-year Talent maximum.
Where the hosting agreement is part of an EU mobility program, the holder can request the corresponding Talent researcher – mobility-program card and use the program's mobility framework subject to each country's rules.
An eligible spouse and minor children can use the simplified Talent-family process rather than ordinary family reunification. The spouse's Talent-family status authorizes work.
What This Route Is Not
This route is not:
- a student visa merely because the applicant is studying for a doctorate;
- available without a French research or higher-education host;
- satisfied by an informal invitation or ordinary offer letter when a compliant hosting agreement is missing;
- a general permit for any teaching job below university level;
- proof that €2,200 is a universal minimum for every researcher case;
- an unrestricted open work permit; or
- automatic permanent residence or citizenship.
PhD candidates should ask the host whether the legal relationship supports Talent researcher status or student status. The funding label and contract structure can affect the correct route.
Next Steps
- Ask the French institution's international-research or human-resources office whether it is approved to issue hosting agreements.
- Confirm the applicant's degree is at least master's level and prepare the diploma and any required translation.
- Obtain a completed, signed hosting agreement that accurately states the research or university teaching, dates, host, funding, and any EU mobility program.
- Ask the host whether a research-stay agreement applies and, if so, document at least the current €2,200 gross minimum.
- If the applicant already holds researcher status in another EU country, use the specific mobility procedure rather than assuming an ordinary French first application.
- Use the France-Visas assistant from abroad or ANEF for the applicable French residence filing, following the official document list and deadlines.
- Keep the hosting agreement, amendments, funding and payroll records, host confirmations, research-activity evidence, and address records for renewal.
- Check immigration implications before changing host, research project, or funding arrangement.
