Irish Citizenship Through Irish-Born Parent

Ireland Citizenship
Pathway overview

At a glance

If you were born abroad to a parent who was Irish when you were born and was born on the island of Ireland, you are generally Irish from birth. You normally apply directly for an Irish passport without joining the Foreign Births Register.

Summary

If you were born outside Ireland and one of your parents was an Irish citizen when you were born and was born on the island of Ireland, you are usually already Irish. You normally apply for an Irish passport directly rather than registering on the Foreign Births Register.

Eligibility

The usual requirements are:

If a record says only “United Kingdom,” determine the actual place. A Northern Ireland birth can qualify; a birth in England, Scotland or Wales does not count as birth on the island.

Timing matters. If the parent first became Irish after your birth, this direct-at-birth route does not apply. A different route may exist if the parent was already Irish through Foreign Birth Registration, naturalization, adoption or another legal basis before your birth, but a parent born outside the island leads to the separate Foreign Birth Registration analysis.

Adoption, assisted reproduction, surrogacy, parentage orders and amended birth records can change which documents or legal rules establish the legal parent. Do not assume a genetic connection alone is enough in a complex parentage case.

The Irish-born parent route usually leads directly to passport evidence
  1. Parent born on the island of Ireland Establish that the parent was Irish when the applicant was born.
  2. Applicant born abroad Connect the full birth records and prepare the first-time Irish passport evidence.

This generally establishes citizenship from birth without Foreign Birth Registration. The parent’s birthplace and status must both be proved.

What This Route Allows

This route confirms citizenship held from birth. Once the evidence is accepted, you can obtain an Irish passport and exercise Irish and EU citizenship rights.

It may also allow citizenship to pass to your own child. If that child is born outside Ireland, your being Irish at the time is essential and the child may need Foreign Birth Registration because you yourself were not born on the island.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a grandparent claim, Foreign Birth Registration or naturalization. It does not make you Irish because a parent moved to Ireland, received an Irish passport after you were born, or was born somewhere in Britain outside Northern Ireland.

A passport is proof of citizenship, not the source of the parent's citizenship. Conversely, a family story or old passport photocopy may point to the route but will not replace full birth, marriage, and other family records.

Next Steps

  1. Order the parent's full Irish or Northern Irish birth certificate.
  2. Obtain your own long-form birth certificate showing the parent.
  3. Collect the parent's proof of Irish status and identity, plus marriage, adoption or name-change records connecting the documents.
  4. Review the first-time passport checklist for the country where you live and arrange the required identity witness and photographs.
  5. If the parent was born in Northern Ireland, confirm the exact town or registration district rather than relying on “UK” alone.
  6. Get specialist advice for an unregistered parent, donor-assisted birth, surrogacy, adoption or disputed parentage.
