Ireland Residence With Irish Family
At a glance
An Irish citizen may sponsor qualifying non-EEA family members to live in Ireland. The relationship, sponsor's finances and applicant's circumstances must meet the family rules. Spouses and minor children usually have a different process from dependent adult relatives, who face much stricter requirements.
- Sponsor
- An Irish citizen living in Ireland or moving there with the applicant
- Requirements
- An accepted close-family relationship, genuine relationship evidence, and the category-specific financial test
- Family plan
- You must intend to live together in Ireland and document the ongoing family relationship
Summary
Spouses, civil partners, minor children, dependent parents, and some dependent adult children of Irish citizens may be able to join the Irish citizen in Ireland. The route is family-based residence, not automatic citizenship.
The financial test depends on the family category, and the applicant must plan to live with the Irish sponsor. Relationship records and ongoing evidence of the family’s shared life support the case; the citizen’s passport alone does not complete the relative’s application.
-
Identify the exact relationship Distinguish a spouse, civil partner, or minor child from the much narrower dependent-adult categories.
-
Check the Irish sponsor and family evidence Document the sponsor’s residence plan, applicable income history, relationship, and any dependency or custody requirements.
-
Follow the category’s approval and entry process Use the required advance permission or visa route, then register the permission granted.
Nuclear family members normally receive different work rights from dependent adults. Do not assume every relative qualifies or that every family permission is Stamp 4.
Eligibility
EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
For a spouse, civil partner or minor child, the main points include:
- The sponsor is an Irish citizen living in Ireland or moving there with the family member.
- A marriage or civil partnership is lawful, recognized, genuine and continuing, or the child is under 18, unmarried and in the required custody arrangement.
- The family intends to live together in Ireland.
- The sponsor has not been mainly reliant on Irish State supports for a continuous two-year period immediately before the application.
- The Irish sponsor normally earned at least €75,000 gross in total over the three years before the application, over and above State benefits, with that income expected to continue.
- Identity, birth, marriage, and other family records, finances, relationship evidence, housing and good character are documented.
Only one sponsor's income counts; income cannot be combined with the applicant or another relative to reach the threshold. The €75,000 rule also applies to an Irish citizen sponsoring a minor child, subject to the detailed policy and any stated exception.
Dependent adult relatives face a much higher test. For one dependent parent or qualifying dependent adult child, the published 2026 threshold is more than €96,929 gross income earned in Ireland by the single sponsor in each of the previous three years. The applicant must be outside Ireland, obtain Stamp 0 approval before travel, show the required dependency, have suitable housing and maintain comprehensive private medical insurance. Two or more adult relatives have still higher published thresholds.
What This Route Allows
A nuclear family member of an Irish citizen granted family reunification normally receives Stamp 4. Current ISD guidance says this allows employment without an employment permit and allows establishing or operating a business.
A dependent parent or qualifying adult child is a non-nuclear relative and normally receives Stamp 0, with no general labor-market access and no access to publicly funded services. The exact permission letter controls.
Residence under either category can be renewed if the relationship, sponsorship, finances, housing, insurance and other conditions continue. Citizenship is separate: a spouse or civil partner has a possible naturalization route only after meeting the three-year relationship and residence rules.
What This Route Is Not
This is not automatic residence from an Irish marriage certificate, birth certificate or invitation. It is not the de facto route for an unmarried partner, the EU Treaty Rights route for a mobile EU sponsor, or the UK-family scheme.
Ordinary adult siblings, grandparents, cousins and other extended relatives generally do not qualify without exceptional circumstances under the policy. Financial support alone does not necessarily prove the high level of dependency required for an adult relative.
A short-stay visit is not a substitute for advance approval. Dependent adult-relative applications made inside Ireland or after entering as a visitor are not accepted under the current Stamp 0 process.
Next Steps
- Choose the exact category: spouse/civil partner, minor child, dependent parent or medically/psychologically dependent adult child.
- Read the category page and the 12 June 2026 policy before preparing the application.
- Calculate the single Irish sponsor's income for the relevant three-year period and gather Revenue records, bank evidence and any State-support history.
- Build the civil and relationship file, including custody consent or orders for a child where required.
- For a dependent adult, obtain detailed specialist medical or dependency evidence, private insurance and suitable-accommodation proof, and apply from outside Ireland for Stamp 0 approval.
- If visa-required, apply for the long-stay D Join Family visa after satisfying the relevant approval process. A non-visa-required spouse may travel without preclearance but still must establish the family purpose at the border and register after arrival.
- Register the permission granted and confirm its work conditions before starting employment.
