Ireland Residence for Self-Funded People
At a glance
Stamp 0 can let a financially independent person, often a retiree, live in Ireland without working. Applicants normally need annual income of €50,000 each, a substantial reserve for major expenses and private medical insurance. Permission is temporary and must be renewed while the conditions remain met.
- Work
- No work or business activity, including remote work, unless Irish immigration expressly allows it in the permission letter
- Requirements
- Normally €50,000 annual income per person, a substantial reserve and private medical insurance
- Before traveling
- Apply to Irish immigration first; visa-required applicants then need a long-stay residence visa
Summary
Stamp 0 can support a temporary stay in Ireland for retirees and others able to live on their own resources without working there. The application needs the required income, reserve funds, and private medical insurance. Permission is reviewed for renewal rather than granted permanently at the start.
-
Document income, reserves, and insurance Build an individual financial file with the required Irish accountancy certification and comprehensive private medical coverage.
-
Apply for advance permission Submit the current application before travel and, if required after approval, obtain the appropriate entry visa.
-
Register and maintain the conditions Complete registration after arrival and renew while continuing to meet the financial and other conditions.
Stamp 0 is temporary permission without work or business rights. Do not assume it counts toward a particular long-term residence or citizenship route without checking that route’s rules.
Eligibility
The independent-means category normally requires:
- Reliable individual income around €50,000 a year. The official page does not publish a combined €100,000 couple test, so each applicant should be assessed on their own application and evidence.
- A separate, substantial lump-sum reserve for major unexpected costs.
- Financial schedules showing monthly income and spending, converted to euro and certified by an Irish accountancy firm familiar with the overseas records.
- Full private medical insurance, because Stamp 0 does not allow reliance on publicly funded health services.
- A commitment not to receive Irish State benefits and to remain able to support yourself financially.
- Good character and the identity, police, family-status and residence documents requested in the application.
- Advance approval from ISD. An application made after entering Ireland as a visitor is not the correct process.
The permission letter controls the conditions. The general Stamp 0 rule prohibits work or engagement in a business, trade or profession unless ISD expressly authorizes an exception in that letter. A person planning remote work should not assume that a foreign employer takes the activity outside the prohibition.
What This Route Allows
Approval allows the person to reside in Ireland for the period stated in the permission letter, register Stamp 0 and seek renewal while continuing to satisfy the financial, insurance and conduct conditions. ISD's retirement page currently reports an average application processing time of four months, but that is not a guaranteed decision time.
Stamp 0 can provide a renewable home in Ireland for a fully self-supporting retiree. Its temporary nature does not prevent every possible later application, but no one should treat it as an automatic settlement or citizenship program. Current ISD sources should be checked for whether a particular period and permission letter is reckonable for a later naturalization application.
What This Route Is Not
Stamp 0 is not work permission, business permission or access to Irish public funds. It does not qualify as employment-permit residence for Ireland's Long Term Residency scheme, and ISD excludes Stamp 0 from the 96 months used for Stamp 5 “Without Condition As To Time.”
It is not a passive-income visa with approval guaranteed at a published number. The €50,000 figure is an official benchmark, but ISD assesses the full financial picture, expenses, reserve, insurance and documentation. Buying Irish property does not by itself grant residence.
Next Steps
- Prepare an individual income-and-expense schedule in euro and identify the separate lump-sum reserve.
- Engage an Irish accountancy firm to review and certify the overseas financial evidence in the form ISD expects.
- Arrange comprehensive private medical insurance covering private hospital care in Ireland.
- Complete the current Temporary Permission to Remain form and assemble passport, civil, police and financial records.
- Apply to ISD before travel. If approved and visa-required, obtain the long-stay D Reside visa before entering Ireland.
- Register the permission after arrival and renew the approval letter before renewing the IRP card.
- If long-term settlement or citizenship is a central goal, obtain written, case-specific confirmation of how the proposed Stamp 0 periods would be treated before relying on them.
