Italy Study Visa

Italy Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

If you are a non-EU citizen accepted into an eligible course or training program in Italy, you may qualify for a study visa and residence permit. The documents depend on whether you will attend university, an exchange, a language course, vocational training, or an internship. University applicants normally complete pre-enrollment through Universitaly, the official application portal.

Summary

Italy’s student residence allows a stay for an eligible course or training program, supported by admission, finances, accommodation, and insurance. A non-EU applicant completes the visa process where required and then the residence steps for the educational stay. The institution’s offer is only one part of that file.

The exact study program determines the application process
  1. Identify the program and admission route For higher education, complete Universitaly and the university’s own requirements.
  2. Prepare the consular study application Document the study purpose, funding, housing, insurance, and personal eligibility.
  3. Maintain study status and plan the next step Keep academic records and apply for renewal or another qualifying status before expiry.

Admission or pre-enrollment does not guarantee a visa. Employment cannot replace the primary study purpose.

Eligibility

The program must be genuine, recognized, and appropriate for the requested study category. Higher-education applicants follow the 2026–2027 Universitaly procedures and any university-specific admission steps.

For the 2026–2027 academic year, official consular guidance uses €10,179.85 as the first-year higher-education subsistence amount. The applicant also needs return-travel funds, suitable housing, and health insurance. Other study categories can use different calculations and documents, so the responsible consulate's official checklist controls.

The file usually includes admission or enrollment, education records and required recognition, proof of language ability where relevant, funds, housing, insurance, passport, and legalized or translated civil or academic records.

More about this route

Admission or validated pre-enrollment does not guarantee a visa. The consulate separately assesses the study purpose, prior education, funds, housing, insurance, return resources, and immigration entry requirements.

What This Route Allows

For a stay over 90 days, the student receives a national visa and requests a study residence permit within eight working days after arrival. Renewal depends on continuing enrollment, academic progress or attendance, funds, and insurance.

A study permit allows subordinate work for up to 20 hours per week and 1,040 hours per year. A valid study or training permit can be converted to qualifying work outside the annual quotas if the legal requirements are met. After completing a qualifying Italian higher-education award, a graduate may request a job-search or business-start permit for nine to twelve months.

Family members are not included automatically. A student can use the ordinary family-reunification framework only where the permit, sponsor-residence period, income, housing, and relationship requirements are met.

What This Route Is Not

It is not a full-time work permit or a general relocation route. The 20-hour allowance cannot be used to make employment the main purpose of entry.

A study-only permit does not itself qualify for the EU long-term resident permit. After a change to an eligible status, earlier legal study residence can count under Italy’s ordinary five-year calculation. Special rules apply when combining residence in different EU countries.

Next Steps

  1. Identify the exact study category and the official institution responsible for admission.
  2. For higher education, complete Universitaly pre-enrollment and the university's separate requirements.
  3. Verify the current subsistence calculation and document the source and availability of funds.
  4. Arrange housing, insurance, and return-travel resources.
  5. Apply for the correct visa; after arrival request the permit within eight working days.
  6. Keep enrollment, attendance, exam, financial, and insurance records for renewal.
  7. Before expiry, apply for renewal, a lawful work conversion, or the post-study search permit where eligible.
