Summary
Professional athletes and qualified coaches can seek residence in Luxembourg for employment with an approved sports federation or affiliated club. The contract must meet local rules and at least the applicable full-time minimum wage, with coaches and instructors proving the required professional qualifications. Health insurance and personal records also form part of the file.
Authorization normally precedes travel, followed by local registration, medical and card procedures. Casual amateur participation, independent coaching or employment outside the approved sports activity does not fall within the same permission.
Eligibility
The applicant needs:
- a dated employment contract compliant with Luxembourg law from an approved federation or affiliated club;
- full-time salary at least equal to Luxembourg's social minimum wage;
- comprehensive health insurance valid in Luxembourg;
- for a coach or instructor, proof of the required professional qualifications; and
- a valid passport, CV and criminal-record extract or accepted affidavit.
The adult unskilled social minimum wage is €2,771.33 gross per month from 1 June 2026. Because it is indexed, the figure in force when applying and renewing must be checked. A higher skilled or collective-agreement rate may apply to the actual job.
Temporary authorization normally must be obtained before travel. After arrival, the worker declares arrival within 3 days, completes the medical check and applies for the residence card within 3 months. Guichet.lu lists an €80 fee. The federation or club must verify the authorization and notify the start of employment to the Ministry within 3 working days.

What This Route Allows
The card authorizes the sports or instructor activity stated in the application. It is valid for at most one year and can be renewed in one-year periods while the qualifying contract, salary and other conditions continue.
Eligible family members may use ordinary family reunification. After 5 years of qualifying lawful and uninterrupted residence, the holder may apply for EU long-term resident status if all of that route's conditions are met.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a permit for casual amateur participation, independent coaching, work for an unapproved organization or unrelated employment. A contract below the applicable full-time wage floor does not qualify.
The permit is not permanent residence or citizenship, and changing the activity or employment model can require a different authorization.
Next Steps
- Confirm that the federation is approved or the club is formally affiliated.
- Check that the contract identifies the sports or coaching role, full-time salary, term and working conditions.
- Compare pay with the current indexed wage floor and any higher applicable rate.
- Gather passport, background, CV, insurance and coaching-qualification records.
- Obtain temporary authorization before travel and complete commune, medical and card steps.
- Apply for renewal within the 2 months before expiry and retain contract, social-security and salary evidence.
