North Macedonian Citizenship After Residence

North Macedonia Citizenship
Pathway overview

At a glance

Adults can usually apply for North Macedonian citizenship after at least seven years of legal, continuous residence. You must also meet requirements for housing, income, Macedonian-language ability, criminal and security checks, and your existing citizenship. Living there for seven years alone is not enough.

Residence
At least 7 years of legal and continuous residence
Requirements
Housing, stable income, Macedonian communication ability, and criminal and security checks
Residence records
Permits, address registrations, entry and exit records, and explanations of any gaps

Summary

North Macedonia’s naturalization process allows qualifying residents to seek citizenship using evidence of continuous lawful residence, housing, reliable income, Macedonian communication ability, and the required background checks. Keep permits, address records, and travel history consistent. The citizenship decision is separate from completing the residence period; gaps need to be explained.

Seven years is one part of ordinary naturalization
  1. Verify lawful continuous residence Build the residence and travel history and confirm which periods the Ministry counts.
  2. Document the wider requirements Prepare housing, stable income, Macedonian-language, background, and security evidence.
  3. Follow the citizenship decision process Confirm the prior-citizenship requirement and its timing before completing the application and any renunciation steps.

This is the ordinary route. Marriage, refugee, stateless, former-citizen, and special-interest cases have different conditions; no one should renounce another citizenship based only on a residence calculation.

Eligibility

For the ordinary route, the Ministry of Interior currently says the applicant must:

After the other conditions are met, the ordinary-route applicant must renounce the previous citizenship or prove that it will be renounced. This point should be checked for the individual case before anyone gives up another citizenship. Exceptions or different treatment on another nationality route do not automatically carry over to ordinary naturalization, and the other country may have its own loss-of-citizenship rules.

The seven years must be legal and continuous residence, not simply seven years since a first visit, property purchase, company registration, or occasional stay. Obtain the Ministry's calculation of any absences or changes of status if the residence history is not straightforward.

The Ministry says an adult submits the application personally. Minor children can be included in a parent's citizenship application, but their acquisition and any consent requirements should be confirmed separately rather than assumed from the adult's eligibility.

More about this route

This page describes the ordinary seven-year route. North Macedonia has separate rules for spouses of citizens, recognized refugees, stateless people, former citizens, and people whose admission is considered to serve a special national interest. Those routes use different residence or other requirements and should not be treated as interchangeable with ordinary naturalization.

An application is a request for the government to grant citizenship. It is not automatic simply because the residence period has passed. The Ministry checks the applicant's full facts and documents before deciding the case.

What This Route Allows

If the application is granted and the citizenship is entered in the official records, the person becomes a citizen of North Macedonia. The person can then obtain a citizenship certificate and, after completing the relevant identity-document procedures, apply for North Macedonian citizen identity and travel documents.

Citizenship is a permanent legal status rather than another residence permit. It removes the need to keep immigration permission solely in order to live in North Macedonia and brings the rights and responsibilities that national law attaches to citizenship.

The Ministry currently lists an administrative fee of €20 in denar equivalent when the naturalization application is submitted and a further €80 if citizenship is granted. Fees and payment instructions can change, so use the amount and payment slip supplied for the actual filing.

What This Route Is Not

This route is not an automatic conversion of permanent residence into citizenship. Seven years of residence does not excuse missing housing, income, language, background, security, or prior-citizenship requirements.

It is not a citizenship-by-property route. Owning a home or business may help prove a factual part of the file, but ownership alone does not create eligibility. It is also not the correct test for a spouse, refugee, person who has no citizenship, former citizen, or special-interest applicant, because those categories have their own legal conditions.

Approval does not by itself prove that another country will let the applicant keep its citizenship. Do not surrender a passport or take an irreversible nationality step based only on a preliminary pathway match.

Next Steps

  1. Ask the Ministry of Interior to confirm that the ordinary seven-year route is the correct legal category and how it will count your residence and absences.
  2. Build a residence timeline using permits, address registrations, entry and exit records, and any documents explaining gaps or status changes.
  3. Obtain the current application checklist. Prepare identity and birth, marriage, and other family records, proof of housing and stable income, the required criminal-record documents, and acceptable evidence of Macedonian-language ability.
  4. Confirm in writing how and when the prior-citizenship requirement applies. Check the law of the other country as well before agreeing to renounce anything.
  5. Submit the application personally through the responsible Ministry of Interior regional unit. If you are dealing with a mission abroad, first confirm what the mission can receive and what still must be done in North Macedonia.
  6. Pay only through the official instructions for the application, keep receipts and complete copies, and respond to requests for updated or additional evidence.
  7. If approved, complete the citizenship-record, certificate, identity-card, and passport steps separately. A decision and a passport application are not the same procedure.
