Summary
If a close relative holds Mexican Temporary Resident, Temporary Resident Student, or Permanent Resident status, you may qualify to join them. Your relationship and their exact status determine which residence category you can receive and what financial support you must show. This guide covers relatives of foreign residents, rather than Mexican citizens.
Relatives of temporary or student residents normally receive Temporary Residence. A spouse or accepted partner of a foreign permanent resident also normally receives two years of Temporary Residence first. Some other relatives of permanent residents—including parents and certain minor or legally represented children, stepchildren, and siblings—may qualify directly for Permanent Residence.
Check your exact relationship against the consulate's or INM's current requirements. This route does not cover every dependent relative.
-
Check the sponsor's residence category Identify whether they hold Temporary Resident, Temporary Resident Student, or Permanent Resident status.
-
Check which relatives qualify Review the rules for spouses, partners, parents, children, stepchildren, and the narrower sibling category for permanent-resident sponsors.
-
Apply for the appropriate family status Some relatives of permanent residents can apply directly for permanent residence. Spouses and partners normally start with temporary residence.
A permanent-resident sponsor does not give every relative permanent residence immediately. Financial support does not replace the required family relationship, age, or legal-representation conditions.
Eligibility
For a Temporary Resident or Temporary Resident Student sponsor, the main categories are:
- The sponsor's spouse, concubina, concubinario, or legally equivalent partner.
- A person who is the sponsor's parent.
- A child of the sponsor who is under 18 and unmarried, or is under the sponsor's legal representation because of incapacity.
- A qualifying child of the sponsor's spouse or partner under the same age, marriage, or legal-representation limits.
For a Permanent Resident sponsor, a spouse or qualifying partner uses Temporary Residence. The direct Permanent Resident family categories include a person who is the sponsor's parent; a qualifying underage, unmarried or legally represented child or stepchild; and a qualifying underage, unmarried or legally represented sibling. A minor sibling does not qualify under this rule if the resident only holds temporary or student status.
The file requires the sponsor's valid visa or residence card and certified civil records proving the relationship. A Student Resident sponsor may also need a current letter from the educational institution confirming continuing study.
The financial formulas use UMA, a government calculation unit whose peso value changes each year.
When the sponsor holds a residence visa and the family applies together, the guidelines require support for each relative through either:
- Average bank or investment balances equal to 220 daily UMA over twelve months; or
- Monthly net employment or pension income above 220 daily UMA over six months. The consular checklist for a sponsor who already holds a residence card does not impose that same formula.
At the 2026 daily UMA of MXN 117.31, 220 daily UMA equals MXN 25,808.20. This is the formula base; the consulate controls acceptable statements and currency conversion.
Foreign civil records may need an apostille or legalization and Spanish translation. A partnership must be documented under the law applicable where it was formed.
What This Route Allows
The approved relative can live in Mexico with the foreign-resident sponsor in the status assigned to that relationship. Temporary family residence can be renewed within the sponsor's lawful period, while a qualifying direct Permanent Resident category provides the more stable status from the start.
Residence can later support an independent immigration basis or naturalization if the person meets all separate rules. Work authorization is not identical for every temporary family resident; check the issued card and INM resolution before accepting paid work. Permanent Residents may work subject to notification, licensing, employment, and tax requirements.
What This Route Is Not
This is not the family route through a Mexican citizen. It is not available to friends, ordinary adult siblings, or extended relatives merely because the sponsor supports them financially.
It is also not correct to assume that every relative of a Permanent Resident becomes permanent immediately. A spouse or qualifying partner normally starts with Temporary Residence for two years. Conversely, a sponsor's parent may fit a direct permanent category.
Support proof does not replace the civil relationship. A transfer of money or shared address is not a birth certificate, marriage record, or legally recognized partnership document.
Next Steps
- Confirm whether the sponsor is a Temporary Resident, Temporary Resident Student, or Permanent Resident and obtain a copy of the valid card or visa.
- Map the applicant's relationship to the exact official category, including age, unmarried status, stepchild link, incapacity, or legal representation where relevant.
- Gather certified relationship records and arrange apostilles, legalization, and Spanish translations under the filing office's rules.
- Check whether the sponsor’s visa or residence-card category requires the 220-daily-UMA support formula and prepare the applicable evidence.
- Determine with the consulate or INM whether the case begins abroad with a visa or in Mexico with an authorization or change procedure.
- If the person enters on a residence visa, exchange it for the residence card at INM within 30 calendar days after entry.
