Summary

If you have been accepted for study lasting more than 180 days at an institution in Mexico's National Education System, you can apply for a Temporary Resident Student visa. Eligible activities include courses, degrees, research, and academic or professional training. This is a separate status from ordinary Temporary Residence.

Apply at a Mexican consulate outside Mexico. The visa allows one entry during a period of up to 180 days. Within 30 calendar days after arrival, obtain the student residence card from INM. You renew it annually while continuing to meet the study requirements.

Student status has limited work rights, does not count toward Mexican naturalization, and should not be assumed to qualify for the ordinary change to Permanent Residence after four years.

Start with school acceptance, then apply for the visa and card
  1. Get the school's acceptance letter Check the program and required letter for studies lasting more than 180 days.
  2. Prepare proof of financial support Use the accepted income, savings, scholarship, or financing option.
  3. Complete the visa and residence-card steps Keep enrolled to renew and get any required permission before working.

Student status does not give unrestricted work permission. Even a job related to your studies needs the required school and immigration approvals.

Eligibility

The acceptance letter must come from an institution in the National Education System and state the applicant's name, level or degree and subject area, course or activity, start and end dates, tuition cost, and the institution's identifying details. A general admission email or an acceptance without program dates and tuition may not satisfy the published list.

The applicant must also show enough support for tuition, housing, and living costs through one of these federal options. The formulas use UMA, a government calculation unit whose peso value changes each year:

At the 2026 daily UMA of MXN 117.31, the first formula is more than MXN 25,808.20 per month and the second is MXN 268,639.90 in average balances. A parent or guardian may prove support when the applicant is no older than 25. A student with a Mexican-government scholarship is exempt from the usual proof of financial support after the required SRE approval.

Your consular application also needs a valid passport, proof of lawful stay if applying in a country where the applicant is not a citizen, the current application and payment, and the interview. The applicant should use the filing consulate's checklist for original, electronic-certification, translation, and currency-conversion rules.

The visa must be obtained for study; the guidelines say a person whose sole purpose is qualifying study cannot enter on another basis and change inside Mexico to Temporary Resident Student.

What This Route Allows

The card permits the student to live in Mexico for the accepted course or program, renew annually while the conditions continue, and enter and leave Mexico with valid documents. The status includes family-unity rights, but each relative needs a separate family residence file and support evidence.

Paid work is possible only in the limited statutory circumstances. INM may authorize it for higher-education, postgraduate, or research students when there is an offer for work related to the subject of study and a letter of agreement from the educational institution. The student must obtain that authorization before working.

What This Route Is Not

This is not an open work permit, a remote-work visa, or a general residence route with school as a pretext. Employment unrelated to the studies or undertaken without INM approval can violate the status.

Temporary Resident Student time does not generate residence rights for SRE naturalization. It also should not be counted as the ordinary four years of Temporary Residence used for the maximum-period change to Permanent Residence. A graduate who wants to remain should identify and complete the proper INM change for a new work, family, or other basis.

Admission alone does not guarantee visa issuance, and paying tuition does not replace the financial-support or consular requirements.

Next Steps

  1. Obtain the final acceptance letter and compare it item by item with Trámite 6 in the current visa guidelines.
  2. Select the three-month income, three-month balance, scholarship, or financing route and prepare the required evidence.
  3. If using a parent or guardian's funds, confirm that the applicant meets the age limit and document the relationship.
  4. Apply at the Mexican consulate before traveling for the program and attend the interview.
  5. Enter during the visa validity and complete the INM card exchange within 30 calendar days.
  6. Renew annually with proof that enrollment and the other conditions continue.
  7. Before working, obtain the school's agreement, a study-related job offer, and INM authorization; before graduation, plan the proper change to a new status if staying.
