Eligibility

The applicant cannot have dependent children. At least one sponsoring child must be 18 or older, be a New Zealand citizen or resident for at least 3 years, live in New Zealand, and have spent at least 184 days there in each of the 3 years before the residence application. A resident sponsor must have no disqualifying resident-visa conditions.

One sponsor can act alone, or the child can sponsor jointly with their partner or an adult sibling of a parent included in the application. Sponsor income must appear in New Zealand Inland Revenue records and meet the required amount in 2 of the 3 years before the EOI is selected.

For periods using the rate effective from 30 April 2026, the minimum for one parent is:

The rate rises by half the median-wage amount for each additional parent being sponsored. Because the assessment uses two historical 12-month periods, each period must be checked against the table in force on its last day.

The parent and included partner must meet health and character requirements and either meet the Parent Category English standard or pay in advance for approved English lessons. A selected EOI does not guarantee an invitation or approval; every claim is checked.

How people are selected

Since October 5, 2026, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) selects approximately 90% of EOIs in submission-date order and 10% by random ballot. The first selection is scheduled for November 10, 2026. Selection does not itself grant residence.

EOIs valid on October 5 transferred automatically. Queue positions are still being finalized, and INZ will contact eligible holders directly. If an EOI expired before the change, a replacement may keep the earlier date only if it was submitted within 90 days and includes at least one of the same people. Holders must confirm continued interest within six months of each two-year anniversary or be removed from the pool.

What This Route Allows

The resident visa permits indefinite residence, work, and study and can include the applicant's partner. Sponsorship obligations run for 10 years, and the parent normally cannot apply for a Permanent Resident Visa until holding this resident visa for 10 consecutive years.

The right to leave and return as a resident has an expiry date. Check these travel conditions before leaving New Zealand. Residence also does not automatically provide publicly funded services or benefits in every situation.

What This Route Is Not

It is not immediate family sponsorship and is not assured merely because the child earns enough. An EOI can remain unselected or fail checking. It can also expire and be removed for missing the continued-interest confirmation. The parent cannot include a dependent child.

It is also not the Parent Boost Visitor Visa. Parent Boost is temporary, requires insurance, and does not lead to residence, although whether someone followed their Parent Boost visa conditions can affect a later Parent Resident application.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm the family relationship and that the applicant has no dependent children.
  2. Verify the sponsor's 3-year status, residence, and 184-day record.
  3. Obtain official Inland Revenue income evidence and calculate each of the two chosen years under the correct historical table.
  4. Submit only one accurate EOI and keep contact and sponsor details updated.
  5. If invited, file the paper residence application within 4 months with medical, police, English, relationship, and sponsorship evidence.
  6. Watch for INZ’s queue-position email and record each two-year anniversary and the six-month window for confirming continued interest.
