Poland Researcher Residence
At a glance
Poland's researcher residence route is for people carrying out scientific research or development work with a Polish research organization. It generally depends on a real host, qualifying research or development activity, and standard residence documents.
- Research
- Researchers or development workers with a Polish host
- Requirements
- Approved host, written agreement, qualifying higher education, and project fit
- Support
- Health coverage and sufficient living and return-travel funds, as required
Summary
Eligible researchers can live in Poland to carry out an approved scientific institution's research or development project. The researcher needs a qualifying degree giving access to doctoral study and a signed agreement describing the work, period, conditions and resources. The host must assess both the project and the applicant's fit.
An academic interest, publication record or informal invitation is insufficient. Doctoral-school study and a research-related job with an unapproved employer may use different immigration categories. Establishing the correct host agreement comes before relying on permission for a stay over three months.
-
Check the Polish institution and project The host must be approved, and you need the required higher-education qualification.
-
Sign the required agreement Cover the project, length, funding, duties, and the host's responsibilities.
-
Apply for residence Provide funding, insurance, travel, and personal records before your legal stay expires.
A degree or interest in research alone does not qualify. You need an eligible agreement with an approved host.
Eligibility
EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
This route may fit if:
- You are not an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen, including if you have no citizenship, and your main purpose in Poland is scientific research or development work lasting more than 3 months.
- You have a master's degree, an equivalent qualification, or another higher-education qualification that gives access to doctoral studies.
- A Polish scientific institution approved for this purpose has accepted you.
- You and the institution have signed an admission agreement or employment/civil-law contract that includes the required information about the project, purpose, duration, working conditions, and available resources.
- The institution has checked the purpose and length of the project, your qualifications, and the financial resources needed to complete the work.
- You have health insurance or confirmed coverage for treatment in Poland and enough funds for living costs and return travel where required.
The host normally also gives the legal written undertaking concerning possible public costs of a return decision during the 6 months after the agreement ends. A host should check the current MOS document list rather than using an old template.
What This Route Allows
The permit allows residence in Poland for the approved research or development activity. It is granted for more than 3 months and up to 3 years, usually in line with the length of the project and agreement.
Researchers already holding a qualifying researcher permit from another EU country may have separate short-term or long-term mobility options instead of starting with the ordinary Polish researcher application. Those rules depend on the existing permit, host notifications, duration, and family circumstances.
After completing the Polish research or development work, a person who is still lawfully in Poland on the researcher basis may apply immediately for a one-time, 9-month post-research permit to seek employment or prepare a business. This is a separate application, not an automatic extension. The applicant needs proof that the research ended, health insurance, housing, and evidence of an active job search or business preparations. Someone who has already found an employer ready to hire them should instead evaluate the appropriate work-residence permit.
Time on this permit can form part of a longer Polish residence history, subject to the counting and continuity rules of the later status being sought.
What This Route Is Not
- It is not a permit for moving to Poland first and finding a research host later.
- It is not triggered by a graduate degree, publications, or interest in academic life alone.
- Preliminary conversations with a university or laboratory are not the written admission agreement needed for an application.
- A research-sounding job with an employer that is not an approved host may belong under the ordinary work permit or EU Blue Card route instead.
- It is not the student permit for doctoral-school study. A doctoral candidate should confirm whether the institution treats the stay as study, employment, or hosted research.
- It does not grant permanent residence immediately.
Next Steps
- Ask the Polish host to confirm that it is approved to receive a foreign researcher under this route.
- Agree the project title, purpose, duration, funding, working conditions, and each party's obligations before signing.
- Gather the master's or equivalent degree, transcripts, CV, professional records, and any evidence connecting your expertise to the project. Arrange sworn Polish translations when required.
- Obtain the admission agreement or qualifying contract and the host's required undertaking and supporting records.
- Gather insurance, funds, return-travel, passport, photograph, and legal-stay documents.
- File electronically through MOS before your legal stay expires. Since 27 April 2026, temporary-residence applications generally must be submitted through MOS and signed through login.gov.pl. Save the UPO and be ready to show originals and give biometrics when called by the voivode.
- If you already hold a researcher permit from another EU country, check the dedicated researcher-mobility rules before filing the ordinary application.
