Longer professional sports jobs normally use ordinary employed-work residence

Summary

Portugal's special sports visa is a temporary-stay visa for amateur sports activity lasting less than one year. It is not a general sports residence permit. A professional athlete, coach, or other sports employee taking a longer Portuguese job normally uses the ordinary employed-work residence route.

For the amateur route, the Portuguese federation must confirm the activity, and the club or association assumes specified responsibilities. For a qualifying professional job lasting more than a year, the ordinary work route normally leads to a two-year temporary residence permit renewable for three-year periods.

Eligibility

For the amateur temporary-stay visa, the current government checklist requires:

The word “amateur” does not remove sports, labor, safeguarding, or federation rules. The club and federation should explain how the proposed contract is classified and why this specific temporary category applies.

For professional employment, the applicant normally needs a Portuguese employment contract or binding promise, any federation or professional registration, and the general employed-work residence-visa evidence.

Classify amateur activity and professional work before choosing the visa
  1. Confirm the activity and duration Have the club explain the amateur or professional basis and contract terms.
  2. Choose the matching process The special temporary-stay route is for amateur activity under one year; professional or longer work normally uses the work route.
  3. Prepare the relevant host evidence For the amateur route, obtain federation confirmation and the club's required responsibility statement.

The special amateur visa is not a general sports residence permit. Federation and professional rules still apply.

What This Route Allows

The amateur visa permits the approved activity and stay for less than one year. Work and training must remain within the authorized sports arrangement and the bilateral or federation conditions that apply.

A professional employed-work residence permit allows the named Portuguese employment and residence, with ordinary labor protections. It can support family reunification under Article 98, subject to the current sponsor waiting periods and exceptions.

What This Route Is Not

The amateur temporary-stay visa is not a residence permit, a family-reunification basis, or a general right to take outside employment. It should not be described as a one-year sports residence card.

The ordinary work route is not a substitute for the international transfer, registration, agent, safeguarding, or minor-player rules of the relevant sport. Neither visa guarantees selection, playing time, contract renewal, permanent residence, or nationality.

Next Steps

  1. Ask the club to classify the activity as amateur or professional and state the exact duration and pay in writing.
  2. Obtain the federation's confirmation and check all registration or international-transfer rules before travel.
  3. For an amateur stay under one year, obtain the club's responsibility statement covering housing, healthcare, and return costs.
  4. For professional or longer work, use the ordinary employed-work residence-visa process and complete any professional recognition.
  5. Confirm the current checklist and filing location with the Portuguese consulate responsible for the applicant's legal residence.
  6. Do not begin activity until the visa, registration, insurance, and contract conditions permit it.
