UK Global Talent Visa
At a glance
The UK's Global Talent visa is for established or emerging leaders in research, arts and culture, or digital technology. You do not need an employer to sponsor you. Most applicants need approval from a designated organization, called an endorsement. Winners of certain listed prizes can apply directly. There is no initial minimum salary or English test.
- Who can apply
- Recognized or emerging leaders in academia, research, arts, culture, or digital technology
- Requirements
- Endorsement or eligible prize plus identity and immigration entry checks
Summary
This is a flexible UK work route for highly accomplished people in recognized talent fields. Unlike Skilled Worker, it does not require a UK employer sponsor, but the endorsement or prize requirement is a high bar.
-
Choose the qualifying basis Select the field-specific talent or promise criteria, or confirm that an award appears on the eligible-prize list.
-
Obtain endorsement if required Unless using an eligible prize Submit the evidence to the appropriate approved body; an eligible listed prize can remove this step.
-
Apply and maintain the route Make the visa application and keep evidence of UK earnings in the expert field for an extension.
Endorsement does not itself grant immigration status. The route is not tied to one employer, but extension and settlement have separate requirements, with settlement timing depending on the applicant’s category.
Eligibility
The evidence and standard depend on the field and whether applying as exceptional talent or exceptional promise. Academic and research applicants may use an eligible appointment, fellowship, grant or peer-review route. Arts and digital applicants must meet the endorsing body's published achievement and evidence criteria. Since 1 July 2026, the Design Business Association has assessed a distinct design-industry pathway under Arts Council England; it requires recent professional work, recommendation letters and field-specific recognition or distribution evidence. A prize must appear on the current eligible-prize list; reputation alone is insufficient.
Global Talent settlement will add a B2 English threshold
Global Talent settlement will add a B2 English threshold
Global Talent permission does not require English, but settlement applications made from 26 March 2027 will require B2 English unless exempt. The change does not alter the route's three- or five-year qualifying-period categories.
Timing: The B2 settlement requirement takes effect on 26 March 2027. Applications made before that date remain subject to the rules then in force; applicants planning to file on or after it should prepare for B2 unless an exemption applies.
Accelerated settlement may be retained, but details remain open

The consultation proposes a reduction that is expected to preserve three-year settlement for many Global Talent holders. It separately asks about current five-year Global Talent cases and dependents, so the final scope and transitional rules are not settled.
Timing: The consultation ran from 20 November 2025 to 12 February 2026. GOV.UK currently says the government is analyzing feedback. No general implementation date has been announced, and current settlement rules remain in force unless and until Immigration Rules changes take effect.
What This Route Allows
The applicant chooses a grant of one to five years and may extend repeatedly. Work, self-employment, business activity and study are allowed; the holder is not tied to one sponsor. To extend, both endorsed applicants and prize winners must show UK earnings in their field. An endorsement must still be valid and its issuing body must remain approved. The current application total is £766: usually £561 for endorsement plus £205 for the visa, or £766 for a prize applicant; the immigration health surcharge (IHS) is separate.
Eligible dependents can join; they may work except as professional sportspeople or coaches. Dependents normally require five years for settlement.
The main applicant can settle after three years if endorsed by the science/research bodies, endorsed as exceptional talent in arts or digital technology, or admitted through an eligible prize; exceptional-promise arts and digital applicants normally require five years. Continuous residence normally allows no more than 180 days outside in any 12 months, with a research-related absence exception for specified science endorsements. B1 English and Life in the UK are current settlement requirements; the enacted B2 change starts 26 March 2027.
What This Route Is Not
It is not an award for general professional success and endorsement is not permanent immigration status.
Next Steps
- Select the exact endorsing body, criterion and talent/promise standard before gathering evidence.
- Use independent proof of recognition, impact, leadership and dates; follow document limits exactly.
- Choose the visa length with IHS cost and settlement timing in mind.
- Keep evidence of UK earnings in the expert field and a complete travel record.
