Summary
The UK’s current Representative of an Overseas Business route accepts new applicants recruited abroad by an active overseas media organization for a full-time UK assignment. The employer remains based abroad, while the worker must meet the English and financial-support requirements.
The former Sole Representative route is closed to new business-expansion applicants. Existing holders have separate extension rules requiring continuing work for the same overseas business and evidence about its UK branch or subsidiary.

Eligibility
A new media representative must have been recruited and hired outside the UK by an active overseas media organization, be assigned full-time to represent it in the UK, meet A1 English and be able to maintain and accommodate themselves without public funds. The overseas organization must remain headquartered and principally based abroad.
An existing Sole Representative extension requires continuing full-time work for the same overseas business, which must remain active abroad, and evidence that the worker established and supervises its UK branch or wholly owned subsidiary. Ownership or control changes can disqualify the representative.
Representative settlement English rises to B2
Representative settlement English rises to B2
A qualifying Representative of an Overseas Business applying for settlement from 26 March 2027 must meet B2 English unless exempt, alongside the route's continuing employment and residence requirements.
Timing: The B2 settlement requirement takes effect on 26 March 2027. Applications made before that date remain subject to the rules then in force; applicants planning to file on or after it should prepare for B2 unless an exemption applies.
The current five-year route to settlement may change
The current five-year route to settlement may change
The Representative of an Overseas Business route is listed among current settlement-leading work routes. It is not identified as a protected five-year category in the consultation, so its future timetable and any transitional protection remain unresolved.
Timing: The consultation ran from 20 November 2025 to 12 February 2026. GOV.UK currently says the government is analyzing feedback. No general implementation date has been announced, and current settlement rules remain in force unless and until Immigration Rules changes take effect.
What This Route Allows
The initial media grant lasts three years and can normally be extended for two. The holder works full-time only for the overseas employer, can bring eligible dependents and is subject to the immigration health surcharge (IHS) and no recourse to public funds. Dependents generally may work. From 8 April 2026 the application fee is £819 outside or £943 inside the UK, per person.
Media representatives and qualifying existing sole representatives can settle after five continuous years, normally with no more than 180 days outside in any 12 months, continuing employer need, English and Life in the UK. B1 is current for settlement; B2 begins 26 March 2027.
What This Route Is Not
It is not open to a new sales representative or branch founder, does not permit self-employment or work for another business, and does not cover ordinary corporate marketing. UK Expansion Worker is temporary and does not lead directly to settlement.
Next Steps
- For a new case, verify that the overseas employer is genuinely a newspaper, news agency or broadcaster.
- For a legacy sole representative, preserve the original grant, corporate ownership, overseas trading and UK branch records.
- Prepare A1 English for an initial media application and ensure duties, contract and organization evidence align.
- Keep full-time employment and travel records through the five-year settlement period.
