British Citizenship Recovery
At a glance
A former British citizen can apply to regain citizenship after formally renouncing it. There is usually a one-time right to resume citizenship if renunciation was necessary to obtain or keep another nationality. Other applications are decided case by case. Separate rules cover people who renounced the older citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies before 1983.

Summary
Former British citizens who formally renounced their citizenship may be able to resume it under section 13, depending on why they renounced. Section 13 provides an entitlement in the specified cases involving acquisition of another nationality, with a separate government-discretion route for other cases. An expired passport or using another citizenship does not itself mean British citizenship was renounced.
Eligibility
You must prove that you were British and formally gave up citizenship through a declaration that took legal effect.
For the section 13 right to regain citizenship, giving it up must have been necessary to obtain or keep another nationality. You do not need a separate ancestry connection to the UK.
If you gave up citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies before 1983, section 10 applies instead. You need a qualifying UK connection through yourself or a listed relative. You normally must have given up citizenship to obtain or keep Commonwealth citizenship, including certain cases where you reasonably feared losing it.
The right to regain citizenship is normally available only once. The Home Office asks for an official statement from the other country explaining the citizenship requirement; your own explanation is not enough.
Where the renunciation was for another reason, or the entitlement was already used once, the Home Secretary may resume citizenship at discretion after considering the reasons and connections. Good character applies. The current adult registration and ceremony cost is £1,670.
-
Effective renunciation Obtain the registered declaration and evidence of former citizenship.
-
Citizenship type and timing Distinguish British-citizen renunciation from the pre-1983 CUKC rules.
-
Entitlement or discretion Document why renunciation was required and whether a prior resumption occurred.
The pre-1983 route has different connection requirements; section 13 does not require a separate UK ancestry link.
What This Route Allows
Registration restores British citizenship. Whether it is by descent follows the legal resumption rule and the person's former citizenship; it is not automatically upgraded to otherwise than by descent. There is no residence, language, renewal or settlement requirement.
What This Route Is Not
Letting a passport expire, using another passport or acquiring a second nationality does not renounce British citizenship. A formal declaration had to be registered. Section 13 also does not reverse deprivation or a historic loss of a different British nationality status.
An application made from inside the UK does not extend immigration permission. Current RS1 guidance allows travel while the application is pending, but the applicant must use a valid passport and valid immigration status, complete biometrics on time and remain reachable.
Next Steps
- Obtain the registered renunciation declaration and evidence of former British citizenship.
- Prove the qualifying UK connection, present nationality and why renunciation was required.
- Determine whether this is the first entitlement resumption or a case decided individually.
- Apply using Form RS1, address good character and attend a ceremony if approved.
