Summary
The British Virgin Islands offers residence status for established residents under a ten-year consecutive-residence test, normally with no more than 90 days away in a year and an intention to make the territory their permanent home. Some absences may be excused. The Immigration Board recommends and Cabinet decides; the certificate must be renewed every five years.
Eligibility
The government service says the applicant must have lived there for ten years in a row, without an absence longer than a year, and generally no more than 90 days away in any year. It notes that illness, education, and government or military service may be treated differently. Applicants provide local police and medical certificates, references, financial and income records, and evidence of community ties. The Immigration Board reviews the case and Cabinet makes the decision.

What This Route Allows
If approved, the applicant receives a Residence Status certificate. The government says the certificate must be renewed every five years. Ask Immigration to confirm the work rights on the issued document.
What This Route Is Not
This is not automatic at the ten-year mark, a first-entry permit, Belonger Status, British Overseas Territories citizenship, or a British passport. Ask the government to assess any absence that may need an exception.
Next Steps
- Build a year-by-year residence and travel record.
- Check any longer absence and your current status with Immigration.
- Assemble the local certificates, references, income records, and evidence of ties before applying.
