Summary

South Africa's Critical Skills Work Visa is not a job-seeker visa. Every application must include an offer from a verifiable South African employer in good standing, and the occupation or critical skill must appear on the official Critical Skills List.

Applicants should also expect checks of foreign qualifications, including a SAQA evaluation or proof of a pending evaluation and professional-body registration or proof of application where required. A pending SAQA evaluation can support a one-year visa; a positive result must be submitted within that year to extend it to the full term.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Check the current list and the qualifications, experience, and professional registration required for your exact occupation or skill. Working in a generally high-demand field is not enough.

You need a job offer or signed contract from a verifiable South African employer in good standing with the Department of Employment and Labour. Have your foreign qualifications assessed by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), or provide proof that the assessment is pending.

Where required, provide sworn translations and proof that you have applied for, or obtained, registration with the relevant professional body, council, or board. You must also meet the ordinary visa and entry requirements.

If the SAQA assessment is pending, you can receive a one-year visa. You must submit a positive assessment within that year to extend it to the full permitted term.

Taking a critical-skills job in South Africa
  1. Match the exact skill Check the official list and secure a qualifying job offer.
  2. Prepare qualification evidence Arrange SAQA assessment and any professional registration.
  3. Apply and meet any deadline If SAQA is pending, submit a positive result within the first year.

A job offer is required; a high-demand field alone does not establish eligibility.

What This Route Allows

You can work in the approved critical-skills occupation for up to five years, subject to the employment and qualification conditions.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a general job-search visa. You need a qualifying offer and must meet the requirements attached to the exact listed occupation or skill.

A 2026 government policy paper proposes a replacement skilled-worker visa. The proposal does not itself change the Immigration Act or visa regulations. Use the current list and checklist until implementing law takes effect.

Next Steps

  1. Find your exact occupation or skill on the official list and check its requirements.
  2. Start the SAQA assessment and any required professional registration.
  3. Secure a qualifying offer and gather employment, qualification, experience, translation, and professional records.
  4. Apply through the responsible South African visa process or application center. If SAQA is pending, track the one-year deadline for a positive assessment.
