Summary
For someone taking a job with a UAE employer, the standard employment residence route provides a way to live and work in the country. The employer handles the work permit and residence application, and you need the required work permission before you start the job.
The usual two-year residence is tied to the approved employment arrangement and can be renewed if its conditions continue. It does not give unrestricted permission to change employers or take another job.
-
Check the job offer Verify the employer and signed terms, and find out which authority handles the application.
-
Get permission to work Your employer applies for the work permit and arranges the required entry or change of status.
-
Complete your residence application Follow the medical, identity, insurance, and residence instructions for your job.
A signed offer or visit visa does not let you work. Changing jobs may require a new permit.
Eligibility
A job offer and an employer to apply for you
This route is for people who are not citizens of a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country: the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, or Saudi Arabia. GCC citizens have different residence and work arrangements.
You normally need:
- A real job offer from a licensed UAE employer that can hire you.
- The official offer and employment contract required for your type of job.
- Your employer's application for the correct work permit.
- A passport that meets the validity requirement.
- Any required education records, professional license, or approval for your occupation.
- Legal entry and completion of the residence process.
- Medical fitness testing where required.
- Emirates ID fingerprint and other identity checks, followed by the final residence-permit steps.
For mainland private-sector recruitment from abroad, both you and the employer must sign the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) offer form. You generally cannot have an existing work permit that conflicts with the new application.
Some jobs, such as medicine, nursing, and teaching, need separate professional approval. A degree is not required for every job.
Who handles the application
For most mainland private-sector jobs, MOHRE handles the work permit and employment contract. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) handles identity and many residence steps. Dubai residence applications may go through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).
Free-zone, government, domestic-worker, and other special categories may use different offices and processes. Ask the employer which applies.
Starting work and paying costs
You cannot work on a tourist or visit visa. A verbal offer, trial period, cash payment, or promise to arrange a permit later does not change that.
Official guidance says the employer must pay recruitment, entry, and post-arrival processing costs, including the medical examination and residence issuance. Check any request for you to pay costs that the employer is required to cover.
What This Route Allows
With the required work and residence permits, you can live in the UAE and work for the employer in the approved role. You can obtain an Emirates ID and use your residence status for services such as housing and banking, subject to each provider's rules.
Standard work residence is generally valid for two years and renewable. Renewal depends on your employment, the employer's eligibility, your contract, the medical and identity steps, and continued compliance with the rules.
A change of employer, second job, part-time job, or freelance work may need a transfer or a different permit. Qualifying family members need separate residence applications, and you must meet the family sponsorship requirements.
What This Route Is Not
This permit does not allow you to work for any employer or take on any job. It covers the approved employment arrangement.
Looking for work or attending an interview does not qualify you on its own. Verify the offer through the relevant official service and compare it with the final contract. Official guidance says the employer cannot change signed offer terms unless you agree and the change is lawful.
Work residence does not automatically become permanent residence or citizenship. The UAE has separate Green Residency and Golden Residency categories, while citizenship through nomination is exceptional.
Next Steps
- Verify the employer, license, recruiter, and official offer. Use MOHRE for mainland private-sector jobs or the relevant free-zone or government authority for other jobs.
- Read the offer in a language you understand. Check the role, salary, allowances, location, hours, contract length, probation, benefits, and rules for ending employment.
- Ask the employer which offices will handle your work and residence permits and get the application reference.
- Prepare your passport, photo, and any required authenticated education records or professional approvals. Keep copies of the offer, contract, permits, and receipts.
- Follow the entry or change-of-status instructions. Complete the medical, identity, insurance, and residence steps by the deadlines. Start work only once the required work permit is issued.
- Check the issued permit and contract for errors. If your job ends or changes, confirm cancellation, transfer, how long you may stay, and any new permit before working elsewhere.
- Apply separately for qualifying family members once your residence and family documents are ready.
