Summary
Belgium's search year gives eligible graduates and researchers temporary time to move from completed study or research into employment or business. For a Belgian degree, the application normally goes to the municipality at least fifteen days before the student residence card expires. Research and qualifying study-mobility cases have their own filing rules.
The twelve-month permission provides temporary access to work while the person seeks a longer-term basis. It cannot be renewed as another search year. An employer or prospective entrepreneur should start the appropriate Single Permit or professional-card process in time; the search-year card is not the final authorization for an ongoing job or business.
-
Before the filing deadline Qualifying completion Confirm the degree, research or mobility branch and file by its deadline.
-
Up to 12 months Search year If granted Look for qualifying work or prepare a business while meeting the permit conditions.
-

The search year is not renewable. Temporary work access during this period does not replace the permission required for a longer-term job or business.
Eligibility
The common Belgian-degree case generally requires:
- Completion of a degree at a Belgian higher-education institution.
- A valid student residence status when applying.
- Application to the commune at least 15 days before the A card expires.
- A valid passport, degree evidence, health insurance, and sufficient financial support.
- No public-order, national-security, or public-health ground for refusal.
For a diploma obtained in another EU Member State after qualifying mobility in Belgium, the application is generally made to the responsible Belgian post within three months after the diploma was obtained. A researcher normally applies by the deadline stated on the research-orientation page and proves completion of the project.
The Immigration Office decides an admissible study search-year application within 90 days. A granted A card is valid for 12 months, counted from Annex 15 if one was issued while the case was pending.
More about this route
For a degree completed in Belgium, the graduate applies through the commune at least 15 days before the student A card expires. The file includes the completed Belgian degree, passport, health insurance, and sufficient financial support. The Immigration Office currently uses the student-resource standard for the search year, which is €1,062 net per month for 2026–2027.
The route can also cover a graduate from another EU Member State who participated in eligible student mobility in Belgium, and a researcher who completed a Belgian research project or qualifying mobility. Filing location and deadlines differ for those cases.
What This Route Allows
During the 12 months, the holder has unrestricted access to the Belgian labor market and can work while actively seeking employment that will support a Single Permit, or prepare a lawful self-employed activity and professional-card application.
The Immigration Office may ask, no earlier than three months after issue, for proof that the person has a reasonable chance of being hired or starting a business. The holder must continue to have insurance and resources and must not become a burden on public authorities.
What This Route Is Not
This is not renewable, permanent, or itself the final authorization for a long-term job or business. Unrestricted work access during the search year is temporary. An employer should apply promptly for the correct Single Permit, and a prospective entrepreneur should promptly pursue the professional card.
It is not available merely because someone once studied or researched in Belgium; completion, status, mobility, and filing deadlines matter.
Next Steps
- Identify whether the basis is a Belgian degree, eligible EU student mobility, completed Belgian research, or research mobility.
- Obtain the official degree or research-completion evidence before the relevant deadline.
- Prepare proof of insurance and sufficient financial support using the current applicable amount.
- File through the commune at least 15 days before card expiry for the ordinary Belgian-degree case; use the official consular process for the eligible foreign-degree mobility case.
- During the year, keep dated evidence of applications, interviews, business planning, and professional-card or Single Permit steps.
- Ask an employer to file the Single Permit well before the search year ends, or submit the professional-card process early.
- Do not assume that a pending late work application extends the search-year residence or work right.
