Bulgarian Citizenship by Ancestry
At a glance
Bulgaria's origin route is for people who can document Bulgarian origin through a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent when ordinary descent recognition does not fit. It generally requires official records proving Bulgarian origin and can waive ordinary residence and language requirements.

Summary
Bulgaria offers a citizenship application based on documented Bulgarian origin for people whose case does not fit recognition through an already-citizen parent. Official records must establish the ancestor's origin and connect the applicant to that parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent.
The route waives the ordinary requirements to live in Bulgaria first, show Bulgarian income, pass a language test, or give up another citizenship under Bulgarian law. These exemptions do not replace the family evidence or the required application and interview.
-
Identify a qualifying Bulgarian-origin relative A parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent must be supported by accepted official evidence.
-
Build the complete civil-record chain Connect that relative to the applicant and resolve name or record gaps.
-
Apply under Article 15 Follow the Ministry of Justice process, including the required interview and document review.
This is a simplified citizenship application, not confirmation that citizenship automatically passed through the family.
Eligibility
- Age 18 or older
- Documented Bulgarian origin through a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent
- Official civil, church, school, military or other records proving both the Bulgarian origin and your family link
- Clean criminal record and no pending criminal proceedings
- No active security concerns
- Properly authenticated and officially translated records where required
- No Bulgarian-language test under the Article 15 waiver
- Bulgaria does not require an Article 15 applicant to renounce an existing citizenship
Useful evidence can include civil or church records, Bulgarian passports or identity papers, military records, school records, or foreign naturalization documents that identify the relative's Bulgarian origin. A document showing only a Bulgarian birthplace may help with research but does not necessarily prove ethnic origin.
What This Route Allows
If approved, you become a Bulgarian citizen and can apply separately for Bulgarian identity and passport documents. Bulgarian citizenship also provides EU citizenship and the related free-movement rights.
What This Route Is Not
This is not automatic citizenship based on a Bulgarian birthplace, surname or family story. The qualifying relative must be no further back than a great-grandparent, and the evidence must establish Bulgarian ethnic origin rather than only residence in Bulgaria or another part of the former region.
This route is also different from confirming citizenship that already passed through a Bulgarian parent. Someone who may already be Bulgarian should check the descent-confirmation route first.
Next Steps
- Identify the Bulgarian parent, grandparent or great-grandparent and gather official records that describe that person's Bulgarian origin.
- Build the civil-record chain from that relative to you, including birth, marriage, adoption and name-change records where relevant.
- Search the Bulgarian State Archives, Orthodox diocesan archives and other official collections for missing historical records.
- Ask the Ministry of Justice or responsible Bulgarian mission which records require an apostille (a certificate verifying an official signature or seal for use abroad), legalization (official checks confirming a document's origin for use abroad) or certified Bulgarian translation.
- Obtain the required police or criminal-record certificates for your countries of citizenship and residence.
- File the Article 15 application through the current Ministry of Justice process and attend the required interview.
- Respond to any request for more evidence.
- If approved, obtain the citizenship certificate and complete the required registration before applying separately for a passport.
