Bulgarian Citizenship by Descent
At a glance
Bulgarian citizenship by descent is for people born to a Bulgarian-citizen parent, including cases where Bulgarian citizenship passed through an intact family chain from an older ancestor. It generally requires birth, marriage, and other family records proving each generation and evidence the citizenship link was not broken.
- Family connection
- Born to a Bulgarian parent; older lines must reach the parent first
- Language
- No Bulgarian-language requirement for recognition of citizenship by descent
- Residence
- You do not need to live in Bulgaria to seek recognition
Summary
If one of your parents was a Bulgarian citizen when you were born, you may already be Bulgarian. Older Bulgarian ancestors can matter only if citizenship passed parent-to-child through each generation down to your parent.
This is a process to confirm existing citizenship. If citizenship did not pass to you, the separate Bulgarian-origin route may be relevant.
Eligibility
- At least one parent who was a Bulgarian citizen when you were born
- If the Bulgarian connection is through a grandparent or older ancestor, an intact chain showing that Bulgarian citizenship passed parent-to-child in every generation down to your parent
- Any past loss or reacquisition of citizenship must be checked against the date of the next generation's birth
- An unbroken, documented chain of parent-to-child descent
- Civil records for each relevant generation, authenticated and translated as required
- No Bulgarian-language requirement for descent-based recognition
- No residency requirement in Bulgaria
- Bulgaria does not require renunciation for descent-based recognition
-
Bulgarian citizen parent Establish that the parent held Bulgarian citizenship at the applicant’s birth.
-
Applicant Prove the parent-child link and request official confirmation of citizenship status.
If the evidence begins with an earlier ancestor, verify transmission and any loss in every intervening generation.
What This Route Allows
Official confirmation lets you document your Bulgarian citizenship and apply for Bulgarian identity and passport documents. Bulgarian citizenship also gives you EU citizenship and the associated free-movement rights.
What This Route Is Not
A Bulgarian birthplace, surname, or ancestor does not by itself prove that you are a citizen. If citizenship did not pass through your parent, assess the separate Bulgarian-origin naturalization route rather than assuming a descent claim.
Next Steps
- Obtain your birth record and official evidence of your parent's Bulgarian citizenship at your birth.
- If you rely on an earlier ancestor, gather the records linking each generation. Ask the Ministry of Justice or a Bulgarian consulate to check any past citizenship loss or reacquisition.
- Confirm the required legalization (official checks confirming a document's origin for use abroad) and Bulgarian translations before preparing foreign documents.
- Submit the citizenship-status request through the appropriate official channel and answer any requests for more evidence.
- After citizenship is confirmed, apply separately for Bulgarian identity and passport documents.
