Summary

If you work remotely for an employer or clients outside Brazil, you may qualify for Brazil’s digital-nomad visa or residence permission. You need either USD $1,500 a month from a foreign paying source or USD $18,000 in available bank funds.

Permission can last up to one year. You can apply to renew for an equal period if you still meet the requirements. The work supporting the application must remain a foreign employment or service arrangement.

Prove your remote work and finances
  1. Document the overseas employer or clients Keep the supporting activity distinct from Brazilian employment.
  2. Choose the income or savings test Use the accepted evidence for the chosen alternative and the official threshold.
  3. Apply and register with the Federal Police Track the granted period and submit updated evidence for any renewal.

The two financial alternatives are not cumulative. Changing to local employment needs the appropriate work route.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

The route generally fits a person who can prove all of these points:

Explain clearly who you work for, what you do, and how you can do it from Brazil. An employee can normally use an employment contract and employer letter explaining that the work is remote and can be performed from Brazil. A self-employed applicant should use signed foreign client or services contracts, invoices, bank records, and a clear explanation of how the work is delivered remotely.

The foreign-work requirement applies to the work supporting your application. It is more precise than saying that the person may never have contact with a Brazilian customer, and it should not be replaced with an invented Brazilian-client quota. A person planning ordinary employment by a Brazilian company should instead assess the employer-sponsored work route.

You only need to meet one of the two financial tests. Someone meeting the monthly-income test does not also need USD $18,000 in savings, and someone using the bank-funds test does not need to also show a USD $1,500 monthly salary. The records should nevertheless be current, traceable, and in the applicant's name or otherwise acceptable under the official checklist.

You can apply in one of two ways:

The document lists are not identical. The consular list includes valid health insurance covering Brazil; the in-country list in the resolution has its own documentary requirements. Applicants should follow the list for the route they will actually use.

What This Route Allows

If granted and properly registered, the route allows the holder to reside in Brazil for the authorized period while carrying out the qualifying foreign remote work. Registration with the Federal Police produces the resident's immigration record and CRNM under the applicable procedure.

The current rule permits an application to renew for an equal period. A spouse, partner, child, or other relative may have a separate family-reunion possibility if the relationship and sponsor rules are met; family status should not be assumed to be automatic from the nomad application.

Residence can also make everyday activities—such as obtaining a CPF, signing a residential contract, or opening services—more practical, although each provider applies its own identification and compliance rules.

What This Route Is Not

This is not permission to take an ordinary job with a Brazilian employer. Check the required change of status or work approval before starting local employment.

Approval is for up to one year, with renewal by a later application. The rule does not promise an automatic two-year stay, set an extra income amount for each dependent, or state that one renewal is the lifetime maximum.

This temporary status does not start the ordinary citizenship residence period, which begins with residence that has no fixed end date.

Immigration permission does not decide your tax, payroll, banking, social-security, or foreign-company obligations. Those depend on where and how you live and work.

Next Steps

  1. Map every employer and client that will fund the stay. Identify the legal entity, country, contract, payment account, and whether the work can be performed remotely from Brazil.
  2. Choose the income or bank-funds alternative and collect clear evidence. Keep the legal US-dollar threshold distinct from any changing exchange-rate estimate.
  3. Decide whether to apply through a Brazilian consulate or from inside Brazil. Read the exact document list for that route before ordering records or insurance.
  4. Obtain the required criminal-record certificates and prepare apostilles, legalizations, and Portuguese translations where the filing authority requires them.
  5. For a consular application, obtain health insurance valid in Brazil for the required period and check the responsible consulate's appointment, payment, and passport-return instructions.
  6. After entry or in-country approval, complete Federal Police registration within the deadline stated for the case and check every date printed on the CRNM or protocol.
  7. If remaining beyond the first period, prepare the renewal evidence and file before expiration. If the work is changing to a Brazilian job, assess the correct replacement status instead of relying on the nomad authorization.
