Summary

Chile’s investor residence route covers certain company representatives, managers, and specialists. One option is for leaders of a foreign company planning to invest at least USD $500,000 in producing goods or services in Chile. Another covers qualifying staff at a Chilean company with foreign ownership.

You need an InvestChile sponsorship letter and must apply from outside Chile. Buying property or holding shares alone does not qualify.

  2. Obtain the InvestChile sponsorship letter Document the investment, ownership, functions, and company evidence for the relevant option.
  3. Apply from outside Chile Submit the temporary-residence file through SERMIG with the required letter.

Buying property or holding shares alone does not meet the published company-role requirements.

Eligibility

Representing a foreign company’s investment. The applicant must be a legal representative, manager, or senior executive of a foreign company. That company must be seeking to invest at least USD $500,000 in Chile, and the investment must be directed to producing goods or services. The application must explain the investment's purpose and amount and the applicant's functions. An individual's personal bank balance does not replace the company, role, and productive-project requirements.

Working for a qualifying company in Chile. The applicant must perform managerial or senior-management functions or be specialist technical personnel. The person must be employed by or contracted to provide services to a company established in Chile. That Chilean company's capital or equity must be directly or indirectly controlled by a foreign investor holding at least 10% of voting rights, an equivalent share of capital, or an equivalent participation in its equity. SERMIG does not state that the USD $500,000 threshold from the first track automatically applies to this separate personnel track; the published 10% control and role tests are the important numbers here.

Getting the InvestChile letter. SERMIG requires the official InvestChile sponsorship letter. InvestChile says the letter must be requested online before the later residence filing with SERMIG. The letter supports the SERMIG application but does not itself grant residence or guarantee SERMIG approval.

The standard initial file also includes:

An owner or partner of an company already established may add its formation and amendment records, SII start-of-activities certificate, electronic tax folder, and municipal-license payment. SERMIG presents these as supplementary records, not as a substitute for the qualifying role and InvestChile letter.

Foreign records must be apostilled or legalized as applicable. SERMIG requires an official translation for documents in a language other than Spanish or English and applies limits on how old documents can be to private and public records.

What This Route Allows

If approved, the applicant receives Chilean temporary residence for the period granted and may live in Chile. Law 21,325 generally permits temporary residents to perform lawful paid activity. The related-personnel track is expressly built around dependent employment or contracted services, while the principal track lets the approved company leader carry out the stated investment role.

Qualifying family members may apply as dependents under the temporary-residence rules. Each dependent has a separate file and must prove identity and the family relationship; an approval for the principal does not automatically issue documents to the family.

The permit may be extended. SERMIG requires evidence of progress in implementing the promised investment, the company's current tax folder, municipal-license payment where applicable, and records showing the applicant's contract and associated income. SERMIG expressly says execution of the investment project and presentation of the operation as a consolidated company are conditions for extension.

This category admits a later Residencia Definitiva application. SERMIG's default for recent temporary-residence cases is 24 months in Chile, although an effective investment or operating company is one circumstance that can support reduction to 12 months. Reduction is discretionary, not automatic, and absences or compliance issues can lengthen the period.

What This Route Is Not

It is not a residence-by-property-purchase program. Buying a home, rental unit, land, or passive portfolio does not satisfy the published company-role test by itself.

It is not a general startup or small-business visa for any owner. A founder must still show that the applicant and project fit one of the two official tracks. A Chilean company owned by foreign investors is relevant to the related-personnel track only when the 10% control test and the applicant's manager, senior-executive, or specialist role are met.

The USD $500,000 number is not a government fee and should not be combined with invented legal or accounting cost estimates. It is the minimum productive-investment amount for the foreign-company leader track. Government fees are set separately and should be checked on SERMIG's live fee page.

An InvestChile letter is not residence approval, permanent residence, or citizenship. Nor is there a published “program space” or quota on which this pathway depends. SERMIG still reviews the documents and legal requirements, and later immigration statuses have separate applications.

Next Steps

  1. Identify the exact track and applicant role. Write down the foreign company, Chilean company if applicable, ownership/control percentages, position, contract, investment purpose, and amount.
  2. For the principal track, confirm that the productive investment is at least USD $500,000 equivalent. For the personnel track, document the 10% foreign-control test and the applicant's qualifying functions.
  3. Use InvestChile's official sponsorship-letter process. Do not file a generic investor residence application without the required letter.
  4. Prepare the investment-and-functions document so it matches the company, project, amounts, and role provided to InvestChile.
  5. Obtain the passport, current photo, and time-sensitive adult criminal-record certificate. Authenticate and translate foreign documents under SERMIG's current rules.
  6. File the temporary-residence application from outside Chile through SERMIG's Digital Procedures Portal.
  7. After approval, preserve evidence of actual capital deployment, operating activity, tax compliance, municipal licensing, contract, and income. Those records are central to extension and any later permanent-residence application.
