Summary

If a pension or regular income from property or financial assets can cover your living costs, you may qualify for temporary residence in Chile. You must own the assets producing the income.

Apply from outside Chile with records showing the source and regular payments. Chile assesses whether the amount covers your basic needs using official social indicators; there is no published fixed dollar minimum. Approved temporary residents can also do lawful paid work.

Eligibility

The documents depend on how you receive your income.

If you receive a pension. The applicant must have obtained a retirement pension under the law of the country of residence. The pension must be enough to cover at least the person's basic needs during the stay in Chile under the official social indicators. SERMIG requires a pension certificate stating the amount and duration and proof of the latest available pension payment. The pension certificate and payment proof must be apostilled or legalized when applicable.

If you receive income from assets you own. The applicant must receive constant income from renting out property or from financial assets. The income must be received regularly and be enough to cover at least the applicant's basic needs in Chile under the same social indicators.

For income from real estate, SERMIG asks for:

For income from financial assets, SERMIG asks for:

The general initial documents include a current passport, a current photo, and—for an adult—a criminal-record certificate from the country of origin or a country where the applicant lived during the last five years. The application must be filed from abroad. SERMIG says the passport needs at least one year of validity, and the criminal-record certificate must be no more than 60 days old.

Foreign documents must be apostilled or legalized as applicable. A document in a language other than Spanish or English needs the official translation SERMIG describes. Private and public documents are subject to current limits on how old documents can be, so old statements may have to be reissued.

  1. Identify the pension or asset income Identify the qualifying pension, owned real estate, or owned financial assets.
  2. Document the regular payments Connect the pension certificate or asset ownership to actual receipts and sufficient support.
  3. Apply from outside Chile Prepare the required authenticated evidence and temporary-residence application.

The branches are alternatives. There is no published universal minimum in US dollars; the authority assesses the supported income against basic needs.

What This Route Allows

An approved applicant may live in Chile for the temporary-residence period granted. The general statutory maximum is up to two years. The person can perform lawful paid activity under Article 73 of Law 21,325; using pension or asset income as the application basis does not itself impose a general work ban.

Eligible family members may apply separately as dependents under Article 74 and Decree 177. The principal applicant should expect to show enough support for the household, and each dependent must provide the relationship and identity records required by the dependent process.

The route can be extended. A pensioner must show that the pensioner status continues and provide evidence of enough money to cover expenses in Chile. A rentista must provide current records showing that the qualifying asset-income status and sufficient recurring resources continue.

The category admits a later Residencia Definitiva application. SERMIG's baseline for recent temporary-residence cases is 24 months in Chile. Availability of income or a pension is one circumstance that may allow SERMIG to reduce the minimum to 12 months, but the reduction is not automatic. Absences, insufficient means, lack of economic stability, or compliance issues can increase the required period.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a savings-only route. A large bank balance does not by itself prove a pension or constant income generated by real estate or financial assets.

It is not a general route for all “passive income.” SERMIG's published categories do not separately list salary, freelance revenue, royalties, a business owner's operating income, a one-time capital gain, gifts, or occasional distributions. An annuity or trust arrangement should not be assumed to qualify from its name alone; the applicant would need to show that it legally fits the pension or owned-financial-asset branch and produces regular income.

It is not correct to apply an unofficial dollar threshold to every household. SERMIG uses official Chilean social indicators and evaluates the evidence. Dependents and household needs can affect whether the resources are sufficient.

The temporary permit is not direct permanent residence or citizenship. It creates a lawful residence period; later applications have separate residence, absence, income, background, and compliance tests.

Next Steps

  1. Identify your income source: pension, owned real estate, or owned financial assets. Do not combine unrelated income under a generic “rentista” label without identifying its documented source.
  2. For a pension, obtain the official pension certificate with amount and duration and the latest payment proof. For real estate, obtain ownership, lease, and payment records. For financial assets, obtain ownership and income records.
  3. Prepare a simple schedule showing the regular payment dates, gross and net amounts, currency, and supporting document for each entry. Do not substitute a projected yield for actual income evidence.
  4. Check the current social indicators and explain how the recurring income covers the applicant and any dependent household members. There is no official fixed US-dollar shortcut.
  5. Obtain the passport, photo, and time-sensitive adult criminal-record certificate. Authenticate and translate documents under SERMIG's current rules.
  6. Apply from outside Chile through the SERMIG Digital Procedures Portal.
  7. Keep pension statements, leases, asset records, bank receipts, tax records, and Chile travel dates throughout the permit. They will matter for extension and any later permanent-residence application.
