Summary

Colombia's digital nomad visa lets you stay for up to two years while working remotely for businesses or clients outside Colombia. You do not have to work in technology. There is also an option for people starting a qualifying digital-content or information-technology business.

You need an eligible passport, health insurance, and enough monthly income. This is a temporary Visitor visa: it does not allow paid work for Colombian clients or employers, and the time does not count toward permanent residence.

Prepare your digital nomad application
  1. Check your passport and work plans Confirm that your passport qualifies and your remote work or digital business fits the visa.
  2. Gather proof of work and income Prepare work letters or a business plan, bank statements, and health insurance.
  3. Apply online If approved, follow the work restrictions and dates on your visa.

Paid work for Colombian clients or employers is not allowed. This temporary stay does not count toward permanent residence.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Your passport

Your passport must be from a country or territory on Colombia's current list of nationalities that do not need a visa for short visits. Check the official list near your application date. Living in an eligible country, or holding its visa, does not automatically make your passport eligible. Any separate exemption needs to be checked against its specific conditions.

Your work or business

The documents depend on what you plan to do:

Income and insurance

Your bank statements must show income of at least three times Colombia's monthly minimum wage in each of the previous three months. That is COP 5,252,715 per month in 2026. Use the minimum wage in force when you apply and allow for exchange-rate changes if you are paid in another currency. There is no published option to replace the income with savings.

You also need health insurance covering your whole planned stay in Colombia. It must cover accidents, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death, and repatriation—the cost of returning you or your remains to your home country.

What This Route Allows

Your stay and family

If approved, you can stay for the period shown on your visa and carry out the remote work or digital project it authorizes. Two years is the maximum; a shorter visa may be issued.

Your financially dependent spouse or recognized permanent partner, children up to age 25, and children with a qualifying disability regardless of age may apply for family visas, officially called beneficiary visas. Each person applies separately. These family visas do not allow work.

A shorter visit

If your passport allows visa-free visits, you may be able to work remotely during an ordinary short stay without obtaining this visa, provided you receive no payments from Colombian companies. The rule allows an initial stay of up to 90 days, with a possible extension to a total of 180 days in a calendar year. Your entry permission determines your actual stay.

What This Route Is Not

You cannot use this visa for paid work for a person or business legally based in Colombia. Payment in a foreign currency or into an overseas bank account does not change that restriction. If you have both foreign and Colombian clients, check whether another visa is needed.

Time on this Visitor visa does not count toward a Resident visa or citizenship. An extension is not automatic. If you later want to settle permanently or take local work, you will need to qualify for a suitable visa.

The visa also does not settle your tax obligations or your employer's payroll, social-security, or business obligations in Colombia. Those follow separate rules.

Next Steps

  1. Check that your passport and planned work fit the visa.
  2. Gather your work letters, contracts, and ownership records, or prepare your digital-business plan.
  3. Check each of your last three months of income against the current peso minimum.
  4. Arrange insurance for the whole stay and confirm that it includes every required type of coverage.
  5. Apply through the Foreign Ministry's online visa service and respond to any requests for more information.
  6. If approved, check the dates and work conditions on your visa. Complete any required registration with Migración Colombia, the immigration authority, and keep track of your permitted stay.
