Summary

If you work remotely for an employer, clients, or a company you own outside Ecuador, you can apply for Ecuador’s digital-nomad residence. The official category is open to citizens of all countries.

The income test is three unified basic salaries a month during the previous three months, or 36 over a year. With the 2026 basic salary of USD $482, that is USD $1,446 a month or USD $17,352 a year, plus USD $250 a month per dependent. You also need health coverage valid in Ecuador for the full visa period and documents proving the foreign work arrangement.

Prove your foreign work and income
  1. Document the overseas work or business Document the overseas employer, clients, or owned company.
  2. Check the monthly or annual income test Use the official basic-salary calculation and evidence for the required period.
  3. Apply through e-VISAS Maintain the remote-work, income, passport, and insurance evidence during the process.

The category is not based only on savings and does not authorize ordinary employment for an Ecuadorian employer.

Eligibility

Your documents need to show:

For an employee, the evidence may include the foreign employment relationship and permission or practical ability to work remotely. For an independent contractor, the file should clearly identify foreign clients and the services. For a business owner, ownership and that the business is based abroad matter. A local Ecuadorian employer or Ecuadorian client relationship is not the foreign-work arrangement this category requires.

Your income must meet the full minimum; in 2026, anything below USD $1,446 a month falls short of the monthly test. The amount must be recalculated in the year you apply because Ecuador resets the basic salary. Do not count undocumented future income. If relying on the annual alternative, confirm with the processing office exactly what period and bank evidence it expects.

The policy must expressly cover care in Ecuador for the full requested visa period. A credit-card benefit, short travel policy, or policy excluding long stays should not be assumed sufficient.

What This Route Allows

Approval gives temporary residence in Ecuador while the qualifying foreign remote work continues. Current law generally permits temporary residence for up to two years and provides for renewal, subject to the law and the category still being satisfied at the time of renewal.

The resident can make Ecuador their home, obtain the corresponding identity document, rent or buy property, use local services, and continue the documented remote activity. Eligible family members can apply under the applicable dependent rules if their relationship records and the additional income requirement are met.

Temporary residence can be relevant to a later permanent-residence application, but permanent residence is separate and must satisfy the law in force when filed. It is not issued automatically with the digital-nomad visa.

Spending substantial time in Ecuador can also create Ecuadorian tax residence. The SRI rules include day-count, economic-interest, and family-connection tests. A foreign employer and foreign bank account do not by themselves prevent Ecuadorian tax residence.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a tourist extension, a savings-only route, or the category for an ordinary job with an Ecuadorian employer. You must meet the full income requirement and show health coverage that meets the rules.

The visa does not give permanent residence or citizenship, and it does not remove tax or business obligations. If you have Ecuadorian clients, employees, a local business, or regulated services, check whether another residence category and additional registrations are needed.

Next Steps

  1. Identify how you work abroad: as an employee, a contractor with foreign clients, or the owner of a company based outside Ecuador.
  2. Download the current official digital-nomad procedure and compare its evidence list with the contracts, company records, and letters actually available.
  3. Calculate income using the current filing-year basic salary. For 2026, retain statements proving either the USD $1,446 monthly test for the required preceding period or the USD $17,352 annual alternative.
  4. Add USD $250 per month for every dependent and prepare civil records proving each relationship.
  5. Obtain written insurance confirmation that the applicant and dependents are covered in Ecuador for the full visa period.
  6. Order criminal and civil documents only after confirming issue-date, apostille/legalization, and translation rules with the responsible office.
  7. Apply online through the Ministry’s e-VISAS platform and keep the remote work, income, passport, and insurance valid during processing and after approval.
  8. Before moving, review SRI tax residence and obtain cross-border tax advice.
