Summary
Regular income from rent, investments, or similar lawful sources can support an application for Ecuador’s rentista residence. The income can come from Ecuador or abroad.
You need at least three unified basic salaries each month. For 2026, that is USD $1,446, based on the USD $482 basic salary, plus USD $250 per dependent. Health coverage must be valid in Ecuador for the full visa period. Savings or an expected return do not replace actual recurring income.
Eligibility
You need to show:
- regular, lawful personal income;
- a source such as lease income, investment instruments, or another genuinely similar source;
- at least three current unified basic salaries every month;
- an additional USD $250 monthly for each accompanying dependent;
- reliable documents tying the income source to the applicant;
- payment records showing that the stated income is real and recurring;
- health coverage valid in Ecuador for the full visa period;
- a valid passport and lawful immigration status;
- required identity and criminal-record documents; and
- proper apostille or legalization and Spanish translation for foreign records where required.
The exact supporting documents depend on the source. A rental case may need ownership, leases, and payment evidence. An investment-income case may need the instrument, issuer or account records, and payment statements. An annuity, royalty, trust distribution, or similar source must be examined on its own facts rather than accepted simply because it is labeled “passive.”
Variable capital gains, occasional asset sales, or discretionary withdrawals may not meet the requirement for regular monthly income.
Recalculate the minimum for the year you apply. In 2026, anything below USD $1,446 a month falls short. If income is received in another currency, ask how the processing office values it and what period of evidence it expects.
-
Document your recurring income Identify rent, investments, or a genuinely similar source.
-
Calculate the household minimum Calculate three current basic salaries and the dependent additions.
-
Gather payment and health-coverage records Link source records to actual payments and arrange Ecuador-valid health coverage.
Recalculate the threshold for the year you apply; income may arise in Ecuador or abroad.
What This Route Allows
Approval gives temporary residence in Ecuador based on the documented income. Current law generally allows temporary residence for up to two years and provides for renewal when the category remains satisfied.
The resident can live in Ecuador, obtain the corresponding identity document, use local services, and undertake lawful activities consistent with Ecuadorian law. Eligible dependents may use the applicable family process when relationship evidence and the added income amount are documented.
The status can later be relevant to a separate permanent-residence application. It does not convert automatically, and it does not itself grant citizenship.
Income received in Ecuador, ownership of Ecuadorian assets, or substantial physical presence can have tax consequences. Immigration approval does not decide whether the income is taxable or whether the person is an Ecuadorian tax resident.
What This Route Is Not
A savings balance, occasional asset sale, or withdrawal does not by itself prove regular qualifying income. Not every dividend, gain, or payment will meet the test.
A certified retirement pension or active remote work may belong under the pensioner or digital-nomad category instead. Those procedures need different evidence, even when income amounts overlap.
Income need not come only from abroad or be guaranteed for life. You must still show that it is regular and meets the official rules, obtain the required health coverage, and apply separately for any later permanent residence or citizenship.
Next Steps
- Identify one or more income sources that can be documented clearly as regular, lawful personal income.
- Download the current official rentista procedure and compare its wording with the underlying contract, asset, issuer records, and payment history.
- Recalculate three unified basic salaries for the year you apply. For 2026, use USD $1,446 and add USD $250 monthly for each dependent.
- Ask the processing office what payment history it expects and how it converts non-dollar income.
- Collect source documents and bank records that reconcile exactly: who pays, who receives the money, amount, frequency, and dates.
- Arrange apostille or legalization and accepted Spanish translations for foreign documents.
- Obtain written insurance evidence showing coverage in Ecuador for the full visa period.
- Prepare current passport, criminal-record, immigration-status, and dependent civil records and apply online through the Ministry’s e-VISAS platform.
- Obtain tax advice about the income source, assets, and Ecuadorian tax residence before moving.
