Croatia Digital Nomad Residence
At a glance
Croatia's digital-nomad permission lets you live there while working remotely for a company outside Croatia, including your own company. You must not work for or provide services to employers in Croatia. This route is for people who are not EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens.
- Work
- Remote work for a foreign employer or an own company not registered in Croatia
- Requirements
- Foreign remote work, formula-based means, insurance, clean record, and Croatian address
- Local work
- Does not allow work or services for Croatian employers
Summary
Croatia grants temporary stay to digital nomads for up to 18 months. The pathway is for third-country nationals who work remotely through communication technology for a foreign employer or their own foreign company, and who do not perform work or provide services to employers in Croatia. Croatia uses a formula-based means test tied to Croatian average monthly net salary rather than a single fixed euro threshold.
-
Confirm the remote-work arrangement Document work for a company or own company outside Croatia.
-
Prepare funds and the residence evidence Choose the accepted income or savings method and include family additions and required documents.
-
Apply and track the granted stay Check extension timing and the overall maximum before relying on more time.
The status does not authorize a Croatian job or services for Croatian employers. A shorter first grant does not remove the total-stay limit.
Eligibility
EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
The applicant should be able to prove all of the following.
Citizenship. The route is for someone who is not a citizen of an EU or EEA country or Switzerland. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens use free-movement residence rules instead.
Qualifying foreign remote work. The work is performed through communication technology for a company that is not registered in Croatia, or through the applicant's own company registered outside Croatia. The Ministry accepts evidence such as an employment or service contract, an employer statement confirming remote work, or the foreign registration of the applicant's own company together with proof that the applicant works through it. The status does not permit work or services for employers in Croatia.
Enough financial means. The applicant can show the required monthly amount or the total amount for the intended period. The Ministry lists three main forms of proof: a bank statement showing the full required lump sum, bank statements showing regular income at the required monthly level, or payslips for at least six months. Family members increase the threshold.
Health coverage. Travel or private health insurance must cover Croatia for the planned stay.
Passport validity. The passport must remain valid for at least three months beyond the intended period of stay.
Criminal-record evidence. A first-time applicant needs proof of no relevant criminal conviction from the home country and from a country where the applicant lived for more than one year immediately before arriving in Croatia. The document must be legalized as required. The Ministry says this particular proof is not resubmitted with an extension application.
Croatian address. The application asks for an address or intended address. A first-time applicant without settled housing may give a temporary booking, such as a hotel or hostel, but must complete the required residence-address registration after approval and arrival.
Application documents may be submitted in Croatian or English. A translation into either language must be made by an authorized translator, and financial documents must clearly identify the currency.
Close family members may apply for family reunification after the digital nomad has been granted temporary stay. The Ministry includes qualifying unmarried partners in the family rules; its current guidance generally describes a childless couple as needing more than three years together, with different treatment where the couple has a child or later marries. An application filed before the digital nomad's own stay is granted will be rejected.
More about this route
The stay can be granted for up to 18 months. If Croatia initially grants less than 18 months, the holder may apply for one extension no later than 60 days before expiry; the extension can be up to six months and remains subject to the overall maximum. This is a temporary residence category, not a Croatian local-work permit.
Croatia uses a formula for financial means rather than a permanently fixed visa threshold. The applicant must show at least 2.5 times the official average monthly net salary paid in Croatia for the previous year. The amount increases by 10% of one average monthly net salary for each additional family member, life partner, or informal life partner.
The Interior Ministry currently publishes the one-person requirement as €3,622.50 per month. It also lists lump-sum alternatives of €43,470 for a 12-month stay and €65,205 for an 18-month stay. These amounts are current figures, not permanent numbers; applicants should use the live Ministry page when preparing the file.
What This Route Allows
The permit allows the holder to reside in Croatia for the approved period while continuing the documented foreign remote work. The maximum is 18 months, although the authority may grant a shorter period.
An applicant can use the Interior Ministry's online application system. The correct in-person and visa steps depend on nationality. A person who needs a visa to enter Croatia normally deals with a Croatian diplomatic mission or consular office and, after approval, may need a long-stay D visa before entering. A person who is visa-exempt may be able to apply at a Croatian mission or at the responsible police administration or station while lawfully in Croatia. An online application does not, by itself, extend a visa-required visitor's lawful short stay.
After approval, the holder must complete address registration and obtain a biometric residence permit. The Ministry's page gives distinct deadlines for registering the approved temporary residence and for reporting the actual address after entry, so the instructions in the approval notice should be followed closely.
The holder's close family may join under the separate family-reunification or partnership rules once the main digital-nomad stay has been approved. Each family member needs their own status and documents.
What This Route Is Not
This is not permission to take a Croatian job or provide services to an employer in Croatia. A remote-work arrangement must remain within the foreign-company definition. Someone who expects Croatian employment should examine the appropriate Croatian stay-and-work permit instead.
It is not a permanent residence permit and does not promise an uninterrupted path to long-term residence. The current law requires a six-month waiting period before a new digital-nomad application after expiry of specified prior temporary stays, including a previous digital-nomad stay, another-purpose temporary stay, or family or partnership stay connected to a digital nomad. A person planning a permanent move should assess the separate long-term-residence rules rather than assume repeated nomad stays will qualify.
It is not an 18-month extension on top of an 18-month initial grant. Eighteen months is the maximum grant. The extension provision matters when the initial decision was shorter, must be used before expiry, and is limited to at most six months within the legal framework.
It is not enough to show that income is “remote.” The applicant must connect the work to a company not registered in Croatia, provide the type of contract, employer statement, or own-company evidence the Ministry accepts, and meet the current financial formula.
Finally, the residence decision is separate from tax, social-security, company-registration, professional-licensing, and private health-insurance questions. The digital-nomad approval should not be treated as a ruling on those other obligations.
Next Steps
- Confirm that none of the applicant's citizenships is EU, EEA, or Swiss and that the documented work is for a company not registered in Croatia or through the applicant's own foreign company.
- Use the live Interior Ministry page to confirm the current monthly amount and calculate the 10% increase for each accompanying family member or partner.
- Choose the evidence method: regular bank income, at least six months of payslips, or the full lump sum for the intended stay. Make sure statements identify the account holder and currency.
- Obtain an employment or service contract and an employer letter that clearly describe remote work. A company owner should also obtain official foreign company-registration evidence and proof of work through that company.
- Arrange health insurance covering Croatia for the full requested period and check that the passport will remain valid for three months beyond it.
- Order the correct criminal-record certificates and arrange legalization (official checks confirming a document's origin for use abroad) and authorized translation where required. Check both the home country and any country of more than one year's recent residence.
- Decide where and how to apply based on the applicant's visa requirement. An online application is available, but a visa-required applicant may still need a diplomatic-mission application and a D visa before travel.
- Give a genuine Croatian address or intended temporary address, then follow the approval notice for residence registration, actual-address reporting, biometrics, and card fees.
- If family will accompany the holder, wait until the main permit is granted before filing the family applications and gather proof of marriage, partnership, parentage, insurance, and additional funds.
- If the initial grant is under 18 months and an extension is needed, file in person with the responsible police authority no later than 60 days before expiry. Do not wait until the permit has ended.
