Italian Citizenship by Marriage
At a glance
If you are married to an Italian citizen or in a recognized civil union with one, you may apply for citizenship after the required waiting period. You also need to meet language, criminal-record, and security requirements. Marriage alone does not give you citizenship.
- Relationship
- An ongoing marriage or civil union with an Italian citizen, recorded in Italy, with no legal separation
- Waiting period
- Two years living legally in Italy or three abroad; halved with children. If the partner became Italian later, count from that date
- Other requirements
- B1 Italian unless exempt, plus required birth, criminal-record, and other legal checks
Summary
Italy allows the foreign spouse or registered civil-union partner of an Italian citizen to apply for citizenship after the required period of marriage or civil union. The route is not automatic: the relationship must still be valid, the applicant must meet language and record requirements, and the application is reviewed by Italian authorities.
-
Confirm the registered qualifying relationship Check the Italian transcription, legal effectiveness, and partner’s citizenship history.
-
Calculate the applicable waiting period Residence location, later acquisition of citizenship, and a qualifying child reduction can matter.
-
Apply and complete any approved grant required steps Provide language and background evidence and take the oath within the stated deadline.
Marriage is not automatic citizenship and does not replace a separate family residence application.
Eligibility
At the time of the decree, the marriage or civil union must still be legally effective and there must be no legal separation. A relationship formed abroad must be transcribed in the Italian birth, marriage, and other family records.
Most applicants need B1 Italian, an intermediate level. Accepted evidence includes an approved language certificate or qualifying Italian educational credentials. Separate language evidence is not required for holders of the relevant Italian EU long-term residence permit or people who signed the legal integration agreement. A public health authority can also certify an exemption for serious limits on language learning caused by age, illness, or disability.
Applicants must also provide the required birth and criminal-record certificates and must not fall within the legal conviction or security bars. Foreign certificates generally need an apostille (a certificate verifying an official signature or seal for use abroad) or legalization (official checks confirming a document's origin for use abroad) and an Italian translation. The citizenship contribution is €250, with stamp duty and document costs in addition where applicable.
The Ministry's ordinary decision period is 24 months and can be extended to 36 months for applications governed by the current timetable. If citizenship is granted, the applicant must complete the oath within the legal deadline; citizenship takes effect after the oath.
More about this route
The ordinary wait is two years of legal residence in Italy after the marriage or civil union, or three years after the relationship for a couple living abroad. If the Italian partner acquired citizenship after the relationship began, the period runs from that acquisition. The wait is halved when the couple has a child by birth or adoption.
What This Route Allows
Successful applicants become Italian citizens. They can live and work in Italy without an immigration permit, obtain Italian citizen documents, and use EU free-movement rights. Italy generally permits the person to retain another citizenship, although the other country may have different rules.
What This Route Is Not
An unregistered partnership or cohabitation is not enough. This is also not a family residence permit: a spouse who needs permission to live in Italy before qualifying for citizenship should examine the appropriate family-residence route.
Meeting the waiting period creates eligibility to apply, not a guaranteed grant. Relationship breakdown, missing B1 evidence, incomplete foreign records, or legal criminal and security issues can prevent approval.
Next Steps
- Confirm that the relationship is transcribed in Italy and remains legally effective.
- Calculate the waiting period from the correct starting date and apply the child-based reduction only if it fits.
- Obtain accepted B1 evidence or verify an official exemption.
- Order current birth and criminal-record certificates and prepare legalization and translations.
- Submit through the Ministry of the Interior's online citizenship service and keep family-status and address records current.
- If approved, complete the oath within the stated deadline.
