Summary

Japan’s Digital Nomad status lets eligible people spend up to six months in Japan while working remotely for an overseas employer or overseas customers. You need an eligible citizenship, personal annual income of at least JPY ¥10 million, and the required insurance.

The stay cannot be extended. You do not receive a residence card, and you must spend at least six months outside Japan after the stay before receiving this status again.

Preparing a remote-work stay in Japan
  1. Check citizenship and work Your passport and overseas work must fit the official rules.
  2. Prove income and arrange insurance Document the annual income and full-stay coverage requirements.
  3. Stay within the six-month limit If approved Plan your departure; this permission cannot be extended.

This is for overseas work, not local employment or customers in Japan. Accompanying family need separate permission.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Citizenship and overseas work

Your citizenship must appear on Japan’s current official list. The list depends on specified visa-exemption and tax-treaty arrangements; permanent residence in a listed country is not enough.

You can work remotely under a contract with an organization established under foreign law and with its business office outside Japan. Self-employed people can use technology to provide services or sell goods to people outside Japan.

The work cannot be under a contract with a Japanese organization, or involve supplying services or selling goods to people in Japan. A foreign employer’s related Japanese company is not an automatic workaround.

Income

You must personally earn at least JPY ¥10 million a year at the time of applying. This is not a savings option or an official monthly-income test. Use the tax, income, contract, and expected-pay evidence requested by the Japanese mission handling your application; household income alone does not establish your own income.

Insurance and stay documents

You need insurance covering death, injury, and illness for the entire planned stay. Treatment coverage for injury and illness must be at least JPY ¥10 million. Eligible credit-card insurance may be accepted under the official rules, but you must prove both the coverage and its duration.

Prepare your passport, application where required, stay schedule, description of work and income, insurance evidence, and any other requested records. The whole plan must fit within six months, and normal entry checks still apply.

Accompanying family

A spouse or child can apply separately under the accompanying-family category. Check their relationship evidence, citizenship against the applicable family list, insurance, and other documents. Family permission does not allow paid work in Japan.

What This Route Allows

You can stay in Japan for up to six months while doing the approved overseas remote work. You do not need a Japanese employer or the education and experience requirements of an ordinary professional work category.

Approved family members can accompany you under their own permission. They are not simply added to your work authorization.

What This Route Is Not

This is not renewable from inside Japan or a route designed to build permanent residence. Any later long-term stay for work, family, study, or business needs its own qualifying status.

It does not let you take a local job or serve customers in Japan. Having JPY ¥10 million in savings does not replace the income requirement.

Do not assume visa-free tourist entry authorizes this work. Follow the official Digital Nomad application process.

Next Steps

  1. Check the current citizenship list for yourself and the separate family rules for anyone joining you.
  2. Describe the overseas employer or business, contracts, tasks, customers' locations, and how you will work remotely.
  3. Gather accepted proof of your own annual income and check the required currency conversion.
  4. Arrange insurance for the full stay and all covered family members. Read exclusions, deductibles, and benefit limits.
  5. Prepare the itinerary, work-and-income form, passport, photo, insurance, and embassy or consulate checklist.
  6. Apply separately for each accompanying spouse or child.
  7. Plan to leave within six months. A new Digital Nomad stay requires at least six months outside Japan afterward; another long-term status has its own rules.
