Luxembourg Citizenship Recovery

Luxembourg Citizenship
Pathway overview

At a glance

If you once held Luxembourg citizenship and later lost it, you may be able to regain it as an adult through reclamation. This process does not require the residence period, language skills, or citizenship classes used for ordinary naturalization.

Summary

Adults who personally lost Luxembourgish citizenship may regain it through the continuing reclamation procedure. The file must establish both events and meet the applicable personal-history requirements. It includes particular rules for women who lost nationality through marriage-related circumstances without expressly requesting the loss.

This is separate from the special 1900-ancestor program, whose certificate-request and declaration deadlines have passed. A distant ancestor no longer creates a fresh application under that closed program. Someone never personally Luxembourgish should assess existing citizenship, a close-family option or ordinary naturalization instead.

Distinguish personal loss of nationality from the expired ancestor program
  1. Identify the reclamation basis Distinguish your own former Luxembourgish nationality from a historical application under the separate 1900-ancestor program.
  2. Check the records and relevant dates No new claim under the expired program For personal reclamation, prove the former nationality and loss. For an ancestor-program case, verify that both historical filing deadlines were met.
  3. Prepare the available declaration process Use the relevant former-nationality, loss, civil, and good-repute records for the responsible registrar.

The ancestor program required a certificate request by December 31, 2018 and a declaration by December 31, 2025. A new distant-ancestor claim does not meet those deadlines; other nationality routes must be assessed separately.

Eligibility

The continuing core route covers adults who formerly held Luxembourgish nationality. It also addresses women who lost Luxembourgish nationality without expressly asking to do so because they acquired their husband's nationality through marriage or because their husband acquired another nationality.

The applicant must prove their former nationality and its loss. False statements, concealment, fraud and certain serious convictions can prevent reclamation. The conviction restriction does not apply to women who lost nationality without requesting it through the marriage or husband-related circumstances described above. The file normally includes full identity and birth, marriage, and other family records, proof of the former Luxembourgish nationality and its loss, a biographical questionnaire, and criminal-record certificates for relevant nationalities and countries of adult residence during the preceding 15 years.

For the separate 1900-ancestor program, a descendant had to request the Ministry of Justice's descent certificate by 31 December 2018 and personally sign the reclamation declaration by 31 December 2025. A person who missed either deadline cannot start that special procedure.

More about this route

The same official page still describes a special route for direct descendants of an ancestor who was Luxembourgish on 1 January 1900, but that program is no longer open to a new claimant because its legal filing deadlines have passed.

What This Route Allows

If the Minister raises no objection, nationality is reclaimed four months after the Ministry receives the declaration. It takes effect for the future. The procedure itself is free, although obtaining and translating records may cost money.

Restored Luxembourgish nationality brings Luxembourg and EU citizenship rights and does not require ongoing residence in Luxembourg.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a new open-ended descent program. A distant Luxembourgish ancestor does not now create a fresh reclamation claim merely because the family line can be documented.

Someone who never personally held Luxembourgish nationality should instead check automatic filiation, close-family option, or ordinary naturalization.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm whether the applicant personally held Luxembourgish nationality and identify how and when it was lost.
  2. Obtain the historic nationality, family-status and loss records from official archives or authorities.
  3. If relying on the former 1900-ancestor program, verify documentary proof that both deadlines were met.
  4. Present any available reclamation declaration personally to the responsible civil registrar.
